A Full Week Of Hell Week (or Quickly Earning My Shirt)

This past week was the start of Hell Week. I do love the different challenges that Orangetheory has throughout the year and Hell Week is one of my favorites. Hell Week has harder than normal workouts, but if you complete a specific number of them, you earn a shirt. I know it seems silly to be excited about a shirt, but it’s about the bragging rights more than anything. This year, you had to do 4 out of the 8 workouts to earn your shirt. And if you do all 8, you earn a gym bag as well. I knew I couldn’t do all 8 workouts, but I was excited to get my workouts in and earn my shirt this year. And since Hell Week started on a Monday, I was able to get in all 4 workouts required for the shirt in the first 4 days! I had the added challenge during the week with dealing with pain and nausea, but I think it was better this past week than it was the week before.

Monday’s workout was called Group Project and it was a bit of a partner workout. It wasn’t a traditional partner workout because the switches were done as a class and you weren’t waiting on your partners to finish something, but the 3 of us in my group still worked together on the workout.

For cardio, you ran or biked for distance until the last 30-seconds of each block when you had an all-out. But you didn’t know how long you’d be in that block, so you had to pace yourself without knowing how long you had to go for. You had a bit of an idea because the timing correlated to the rowing, but it was still something that only the coach knew.

On the rower, each time someone in the group was on the rower they had a different distance. It started with the first partner doing a 200-meter row and then they held a squat until it was time to switch. Some people finished the row and some people didn’t. The next partner had a 300-meter row and a squat hold, and that pattern of increasing the row by 100-meters continued until one partner had a 700-meter row and a squat hold. After that row, the rows decreased by 100-meters each time.

And on the floor, we had the same exercises every time we were on the floor and you picked up where you left off after the last block. We had pull-ups on the straps, plank shoulder taps, upright rows using weights, and lunges. I felt like the only place I could get a bit of a break was on the floor since we were constantly moving around. But it was a good challenge to always be changing what we were doing and I really enjoyed the opening workout of Hell Week.

Tuesday’s workout was called The Distance Directive and it was all about challenging yourself with the distance you could do for cardio and on the rower.

For cardio, the first block was a 6-minute distance challenge where we started at a high incline/resistance level and the incline/resistance went down every 90-seconds. I started higher than I normally am for my all-out to keep it challenging. And after that challenge, we had a 30-second all-out without incline. We were supposed to remember our distance so we could try to beat it in the second block. The second block had rounds of a 1-minute all-out with a 30-second recovery. And each all-out increased in incline/resistance level to match what we had done in the first block. Doing an all-out at really high resistance levels was so tough and I struggled to get my distance up there. But I managed to do the exact same distance in the first and second blocks so I was very happy with that.

On the rower, we started with 4 rounds of a 1-minute all-out row with a 30-second rest after each row. We ended that block with a 30-second all-out. Again, we were supposed to remember our distance to try to beat it in the second block. The second block started with doing half the distance we did in the first block. Then we had lunges to hops to get done before trying to do the second half of the distance from the first block. I just came short of getting to that distance the second time, but I’m happy with how close I got.

On the floor, each block had a buy-in and buy-out exercise to start and end the block. In the first block, we had hop overs and in the second block, we had lateral lunges. Then for each block, we had 3 exercises to do and we had a range of reps to go for so we could test out different weights. The first block had tricep extensions, chest presses, and knee tucks. And the second block had bicep curls, reverse grip low rows, and high plank knee tucks. I was feeling a lot better this day compared to Monday, so I was able to do a bit better with the workout. But I didn’t change up the weights I used on the floor, which I do regret a little bit. I could have tried harder, but I was worried about pushing myself too much.

Wednesday’s workout was called To Hell Or High Wattage, and I think this was the hardest workout of the entire week. We had a coach in class with us for this workout and that coach as well as the one who was coaching the class agreed that this was very hard and possibly the hardest workout for all of Hell Week.

For cardio, we were self-timed for the entire workout. We started with a .25-mile (or 1-mile for me on the bike) push into a 30-second all-out. Then we had pulsing half squats. We repeated the pattern of the 30-second all-out and pulsing half squats 2 more times before doing another .25-mile/1 mile distance and we repeated the pattern again with doing the distance and then 3 rounds of a 30-second all-out with pulsing half squats. It didn’t sound hard when we were being told what the workout would be, but doing it was another thing. The half squats definitely got to me and I knew I would be sore later.

On the rower, we had a lot of timed work. We started with a 75-second push row into a 30-second all-out row. The second block had 3 rounds of a 30-second all-out row with only 15-seconds to recover between each row. The third block had a 2-minute push row into a 30-second all-out row. The fourth block had 4 rounds of a 30-second all-out row with 15-seconds to recover. And the last block was a 2 1/2-minute push row with a 30-second all-out. That was a lot of rowing and very little rest. And I know that rowing has been a weak point for me lately so that made this even more challenging. I was exhausted after the row blocks, and I still had the floor do to.

On the floor, we had some blocks that were timed with the rowers and some that were at our own pace. For blocks 1, 3, and 5; we paced ourselves with the exercises. We had single-leg squats (which I did as regular squats) and rollouts using the straps. The rollouts were extra tough because I had gotten my flu shot the day before, so I was a bit sore. But I’m glad that I was only sore and didn’t feel worse.  In blocks 2 and 4, we had exercises during the 30-second intervals and rest in the 15-second intervals. All the exercises were single-arm snatches, but sometimes we focused on one side for the entire 30-seconds and then switched sides when it was the next interval, and other times we had alternating sides during the 30-seconds so you had to put the weight down on the ground to switch hands. When we had the alternating ones, I know I did deeper squats to get the weight on the ground, and that added to the soreness I was already feeling.

I was very sore on Thursday. I knew that I would probably feel that way since I was doing 4 Hell Week classes in a row. But I was excited to earn my shirt in that workout. This workout was called Switch The Core Concept, and I’m glad that it was a bit easier on my legs so I didn’t hurt more.

For cardio, we started with a 1-minute push pace into a 30-second all-out. Then for the rest of the workout, we had 30-second all-outs and recoveries. I believe it was a total of 12 all-outs, but I honestly lost count. We started with having a 1-minute recovery and after a few rounds, it decreased to 45-second recoveries. And I believe the last 6 all-outs only had 30-second recoveries. It was a lot to do and not a lot of time to recover during the entire block. I kept my resistance levels the way I normally have them, but I know I didn’t pedal as fast as I normally would.

On the rower, we had an interesting challenge. We set our rowers for a 2000-meter row and the goal was to get as much of it done as possible. We started timed with cardio with a 1-minute push row to a 30-second all-out row. Then we had overhead presses and front presses with the medicine ball. When we were on the rower, we started with rounds of 30-second all-out rows with the medicine ball exercises between each row. After a few minutes, we had 45-second all-out rows with a decreased number of reps for the exercises. And for the last few minutes, we had 1-minute all-out rows with even fewer reps of the medicine ball exercises. I knew I wouldn’t get 2000-meters done, but I was hoping to get at least 1500-meters completed at the end of the block, and I did just over that. I was so happy that I saw I only had 500-meters left of the 2000-meters when there were about 5 seconds left in the block.

And on the floor, it was all core work, as you could guess from the name of the workout. It was one long block and it was a lot. We had plank low rows, weighted crunches, bicycle presses, weighted v-ups, plank pull-throughs, and weighted hip bridges. I had to go a bit lighter for some of the weights because of how sore my legs were. But I’m glad that I didn’t have to do more squats after Wednesday’s workout. I rested when I had to on the floor, but I tried to limit it since I knew that this would be my last workout for the week.

After doing 4 Hell Week workouts in a row, I totally earned my shirt. Unfortunately, the shirts I’ve earned don’t fit me but I still collect them because maybe one day I will fit in them. I lost my first Hell Week shirt, so I only have 8 or the 9 that I have earned. But I still think it’s a very impressive collection.

Even though I have completed the Hell Week challenge, I will still have one more Hell Week workout since Halloween is today. And I’m hoping that I do just as well with that workout as I did this past week to finish out a fun but tough OTF challenge!

Finally My Last Doctor Appointment Of This Month (or Getting Better With Dealing With Needles)

I seriously had a full month of doctor appointments this month. I still have some coming up next month, but it won’t be anything like how October has gone for me. But this last appointment was one that was scheduled a while ago and I had no idea that it was going to be in such a busy month for me with my health.

This past week I had my check-in with my dermatologist. I knew this appointment was going to be pretty simple because it really was to just make sure that I’m doing ok and I don’t feel like I need any adjustments in the treatment plan for my autoimmune condition. And I have actually been doing a lot better with this condition. I haven’t been having as many flare-ups as I have in the past and the ones I have tend to be less severe than what they were before. And because these flare-ups can be extremely painful, I’m so grateful that they aren’t as bad as they were before we started this plan.

The timing of this appointment was actually perfect because I was having one of my rare but bad flare-ups come up right before I saw my doctor. This one was in a really inconvenient location, right near where the seam is on the sleeve of any shirt I wear. It was painful to begin with, but having a seam always against it made it even worse. I knew that before, my dermatologist had injected my flare-up with a medication that helps to make it go away faster, so my plan was to ask about that to see if it would be an option for this one as well.

And as expected, the appointment was very quick and easy. My doctor agrees that my condition is much more under control than it was even at my last appointment. It could be the medications are helping more or other lifestyle changes I’ve been making are making a difference. Whatever it is, it’s a good thing and I’m glad that he agrees that things are much better for me. And I showed him my one bad flare-up, and he said that he could inject it to help it. It can cause it to heal a bit weirdly, but I didn’t care because my focus was making it less painful.

I still hate needles, so requesting to get a shot is a bit crazy to me. But I knew it would help me a lot so it was worth it. And the shot this time wasn’t as bad as it was before. I don’t know if it was easier because it was a different location this time or if I’m doing better with shots now that I have a new medication that I have to inject myself. But I was glad to not fully blackout during the shot and get through it quickly.

Everything else in the appointment was pretty easy. I had to be prescribed one new cream due to an ongoing skin condition that should be easy to use than the pills I took the last time I had to deal with it. And that was that for the appointment. I don’t have to go back until January, so I’m hoping that things will still continue to improve with my autoimmune condition and that my next appointment goes just as smoothly.

After my appointment was done, I had to go to the pharmacy to get my new prescription. The wait was really long after dropping off the new prescription, so I took advantage of having a long wait and got my flu shot while waiting. This wasn’t as easy as the injection at my appointment, but it went much better than what my last few flu shots were like. I struggled a bit more with feeling like I was going to pass out, but I stayed awake and that’s a win for me. And so far, I’m not having any side effects which I usually have after any vaccines. I’m hoping that I don’t have any coming up, but it’s been a few days so I think it’s a pretty safe bet that I will be feeling ok from this vaccine other than a really sore arm.

I’ve had a lot of needles to deal with this past month between the new medication, blood draws, injections, and vaccines. I’m glad that it seems to be a bit easy for me to tolerate them now and I hope that this trend continues. But I also hope that I don’t have another month filled with doctor’s appointments like I did this month. It was a lot to do, but it also allowed me to get on top of multiple health issues and I can feel much better about things now.

Another Day Of Being Shadowed (or Making Some Positive Changes For My Day Job)

About a year ago, my friend and boss came to my house to observe a day of work with me. It was a great day and we got a lot done to make the workflow a lot simpler and streamlined. He was able to see what could be automated and what might be causing duplicity when it wasn’t necessary. I was so happy with the changes we were able to make and I think he agreed that it was very productive. And when that day was done, we mentioned how helpful it would be for the founder and CEO to do the same thing since a lot had changed since he was the one doing this side of the business.

It took a bit of time to coordinate when he would be able to shadow me for the day, and since then my job responsibilities have changed, but we were finally able to make it happen earlier this week. My friend who shadowed me last time was there for the full day and the CEO/founder was there for the second half of the day. And again, it was a really productive time.

Since switching to doing more administrative tasks, I have noticed more things that could be done differently or easier. But a lot of changes needed to be made once the shadowing day happened because we all wanted to make sure that we were on the same page and that the changes we were making wouldn’t affect anyone’s workflow. But I think the bigger part of it was having the CEO/founder understand some of the requests that myself and my co-workers had about changes because I knew that the roadblocks we were encountering were things that he hadn’t experienced in the past.

I’m so grateful that everything went smoothly and that almost all the changes I was hoping to see happen did happen. I think it can be tough to explain what we wanted to see changed over a Zoom or phone call. But once someone is there in person and sees the exact workflow that we go through to accomplish some things, then they understand what is happening and changes can be made. And there were new changes suggested by the CEO/founder and my friend that I hadn’t even considered before that would make things easier for myself and my co-workers when we needed additional information. And once they suggested it, they were very simple changes. Most of the time, it was just moving information to a Google Sheet that the rest of us could access or putting things in a new order so we could see the most important information first and the information we don’t need to see would be out of the way.

Even though most of the shadowing was during just half of the day, I think we got a lot accomplished, and only a few things were left to be handled at another time. But we’ve also already discussed that there will need to be another shadowing day soon because there will be some new team members joining that will need to observe and contribute to this coming up plus some current team members that we realized should have been there to help with some of the other problem-solving.

I know I’ve said this before, but I’m really lucky at the day job I have now. I’ve been able to basically create my own job position within the company and I know that my input and ideas are valued and heard. And they also know that this is a day job and not necessarily a career, so when I have wins in my acting career those are celebrated and not seen as issues. I am working more hours than I ever did, but at least I’m still working from home and I have been able to focus on the work that I enjoy doing more and helping to make changes that benefit everyone within the company. I don’t think I could ask for a better situation for my job right now, and I am so happy that this shadowing day resulted in a lot of positive and productive changes.

A Busy Building Weekend (or Having My Parents Help Me Continue To Put My Place Together)

My parents have been able to come to LA a couple of times since we bought the condo. They hadn’t seen it before it was officially ours, which was a little odd, but they had been on Facetime with me a lot so they had an idea of what it looked like. Plus they trusted the realtor we used and looked into all the inspection details so things weren’t a big surprise for them. They also were here before the remodel started so we could finalize details such as the stone and tile we would use. They came down during the remodel to ensure things were working the way they should. And then they were here when things were technically done and I had moved in, but that was before the floors had to be redone. So they have seen my home in all different stages.

As I have gotten new things, I have shared photos or videos with them so they have been aware of the changes I’ve continued to make. But they hadn’t been able to see the place in person since right after I moved in (which was the time we found my new couch). They usually have planned their visits down here around the time they would be seeing my brother, but they had a trip to Santa Barbara earlier this where it didn’t make sense for my parents to see me because they could only be here on weekdays. I work all day, so I knew if I really wanted to see them it would have to be a weekend. So they planned a weekend in LA and then planned to see my brother around that. And we had a pretty busy weekend.

My parents brought some stuff down for me this time, including a new bark planter for me to put in my backyard.

I had bark planters at my old place, but they were really old and brittle so it was time for an upgrade. And my dad was able to make me this one and then they found a little stand with wheels so I can move it around (it’s too heavy to really lift and move). My dad also helped me out and planted the new plants I bought in it, so hopefully, I will be able to keep those plants alive.

We also had a trip to Ikea. My parents hadn’t been to Ikea before, so I figured it would be fun to go in person instead of me just ordering some things I was looking at online and having them shipped. Plus, there were a few things I was undecided on and wanted to see in person before I decided what to buy. On my list for this trip was a new vanity for my room, some storage for my bathroom, and a big full-length mirror.

I was successful in finding a new vanity, but it actually wasn’t the one I expected to get. When we looked at them in person, I found one that I liked more and that I think fit into my room better. The storage thing I was looking at for my bathroom was the right thing so I got that too. But the mirrors just weren’t the right thing for what I needed, so I’ll have to find something at another store.

Because of how Ikea is set up, we spent a while walking around and looking at the different areas and what things might work for me or inspire an idea. And while we were walking around, I found a cabinet that I had been looking at for a while but hadn’t gotten. I wanted some more shoe storage and something near my entryway to have a place to display things and just to ground the space. So I showed my parents what I had been looking at and they agreed it would be perfect as well. I wasn’t sure about the color since I had originally looked at the white one, but we decided something a little darker would be nice and a good contrast against the paint color.

When we got home from Ikea, we had a list of things to get through. There were a few other tasks I wanted some help with, like hanging some art that I hadn’t put up yet. But most of our afternoon and evening was filled with building the new cabinet and vanity. And I have to say after the cabinet was done that it was exactly the right thing to put in that space.

I haven’t put all my shoes away yet and I might use one of the drawers for something else, but it really fills in the space that you see when you walk in the door and I love that it’s really shallow so it doesn’t block my hallway too much. It really was the perfect thing for that space and I’m so glad that I got it!

Because my parents were only here for the weekend and we had a lot of things to get done, we didn’t do much else while they were here. But that’s ok since I knew this visit would be one that was spent doing a lot of random work. We didn’t get everything done that we wanted to, but a lot was accomplished. And I know the next time that they are here, I’ll have more things for us to put together and to make my home feel even more complete.

And Yet Another Doctor Appointment (or At Least This One Showed Me What I Already Knew)

There are so many assumptions that are made about health based on appearance. I know that you can’t tell health by appearance, but I still feel lucky that I don’t fit the stereotypes that people or doctors make. I have normal bloodwork when I have my blood drawn unless it’s due to something odd (like how my liver tumor affected my liver enzymes). I have low blood sugar and typically I have very low blood pressure. Historically, my blood pressure has been low enough that doctors will take it a few times to make sure. It would be a normal low for someone who is thinner, but I know doctors think it must be wrong because someone who looks like me shouldn’t have that low of a number. But that’s been my normal for as long as I could remember until recently.

I don’t know what changed, but something happened where I started to get outlandishly high blood pressure readings. These weren’t high readings where people have to be seen by a doctor to get put on medication. They are high readings that you wouldn’t be alive to have. So obviously, they aren’t accurate because I feel fine and I’m alive. But it still put red flags in my medical record.

I also sometimes have higher readings before an appointment compared to after. I am always nervous before an appointment, so I know that can affect things. But when my doctors let me do a check after the appointment, they are always back to my normal low. And since they go back to that, my crazy high ones are something to joke about.

But recently, I had an appointment where we couldn’t get my blood pressure to be in a normal range. They were coming up high, but not deadly high like before. So there was a reason for my doctors to worry. It seemed off compared to every other check I’ve had, but because they couldn’t get it to be ok they said I needed to go to the blood pressure clinic to be looked at.

I was able to get an appointment for that before work last week, and I knew it would be a simple appointment because all they were going to do was check my blood pressure. I didn’t have to see a doctor after that. Even though I was sure I would be fine, I was still nervous that maybe something had changed with me and that I did have a new medical issue.

Getting my blood pressure done at the clinic was a different experience compared to getting it done before an appointment. They made sure I was positioned correctly, which included bringing in a stool for me to put my feet on. Normally, my feet dangle a bit because of being short, and that can mess up a reading. They also had the cuff on my arm for 5 minutes while I rested before the first check happened. That way, I would be calm and relaxed. And the machine was set to do 3 checks back to back so they could look at what the average was in case one happened to be high and the others were low.

Because I had to wait before it started and they did multiple checks in a row, I was there for about 15 minutes before I was done. But as soon as the nurse came back after all the checks were done, they confirmed I had nothing to worry about and my blood pressure was still low. It’s a little higher than my normal, but that still puts it in the normal range. And there is no explanation or reason for why it might have been high before my other appointments. It could be because the cuff wasn’t on correctly. It might have been because my feet weren’t flat on the ground or they rushed doing the test so I was stressed and anxious. But that’s the reason why someone is sent to the blood pressure clinic. They can check it in a different way and it can end up being a more accurate reading than something that is just a small part of a bigger appointment.

I’m glad that everything ended up being ok for me and that I’m still just as healthy as I was before. I’ve still got another doctor’s appointment to go to this month (unless another one is added). So I’m finally almost through this crazy month of working on my health.

Pre-Hell Week Workouts (or Getting Myself Ready)

I knew this past week would be tough for me because I would likely be dealing with pain and nausea. Fortunately, that’s all I had to deal with this past week because the side effects from the new medication weren’t affecting me the same way as they did the week before. I have gotten into a good routine in the morning to make sure that I’m feeling ok and I’m glad it was working. Even though I would have loved to feel great during my workouts, at least it was only issues that I’m used to. And it also got me ready for Hell Week, which is starting this week.

Monday’s workout felt like more of an endurance day even though I know there were also strength and power elements in it. Maybe the way I get through workouts when I’m nauseous makes them seem more like endurance days.

For cardio, we had one long block but we had a lot of recovery time in it. We started with a 2-minute base pace and then had a 1-minute push pace and a 30-second all-out. After the all-out, we had 3 minutes to recover and get back to our base pace when we were ready. We repeated that pattern again and then we ended with a 1-minute all-out. Because my recovery and base pace resistance levels are the same on the bike, I did the recovery by pedaling very slowly and then increasing my cadence until I was at what I do for a base pace.

On the rower, we had one block with 3 mini-blocks in it. We were supposed to do each mini-block 3 times. The first mini-block had a 200-meter row and jump squats, which I did as squats with calf raises. The second mini-block had a 150-meter row and lunges. And the last mini-block had a 100-meter row and squat jacks, which I did as regular squats. I didn’t get through all of the rounds of the 100-meter row, but I got through most of it which is better than a lot of my recent classes.

And on the floor, we also had a long block with mini-blocks. The first mini-block had goblet squats and reciprocating rows with weights. And the second mini-block had deadlifts and leg raises. We were supposed to do the first mini-block twice before moving on to the second, and I was on my second round of the second mini-block when we were stopped to do a 1-minute finisher of hop overs, which I did as lunges.

On Tuesday, we had an interesting workout. We had 4 blocks at each section of the room and they got shorter each time. And the workouts within each block were either the same or very similar so we had a lot of chances to do each thing.

For cardio, the first block had a 2-minute push pace, 1-minute base pace, and 30-second all-out. For each block after that, the push pace got 30-seconds shorter so for the last block we only had a 30-second push pace.

On the rower, we were timed with cardio so we had the same intervals. We did push rows and all-out rows. But instead of having a 1-minute base pace, we had a minute to do forward and back hops, and then we could rest if there was any time left. I couldn’t do the hops, but I did do shuffle steps instead and I usually had about 15-seconds left to get back on the rower and ready for the all-out row.

And on the floor, almost everything was timed to be 30-second intervals. For the first block, we had squats to bicep curls, lunges, plank rows, bicycle presses, plank jacks, and squat jumps. The plank jacks were the only thing not done as a 30-second interval. For those, we had 1-minute to do 12 of them and then could rest for any extra time. And each block, we lost one of the 30-second exercises. There wasn’t any time between exercises like we sometimes have, so we were rushing to get from one exercise to another to make sure we didn’t lose too much time in the transition.

On Wednesday, my nausea was really kicking in and it was pretty hard for me to get through a lot in this workout. I was trying to manage it with medication, but it didn’t help me much this day. For each section of the room, we had 2 blocks.

For cardio, we started with a 2-minute push pace followed by a 1-minute base pace. Then we had a 30-second push pace to a 30-second all-out. Then we had a quick recovery before doing another 30-second all-out. For the second block, we started with a 1-minute push pace instead of a 2-minute push pace. We repeated the same pattern but we had 4 all-outs in this block instead of the 2 we had in the first block.

On the rower, the first block had distance rows with an exercise between each row. We were told to make sure we weren’t going too fast with the row because if you finished all 3 you were supposed to be in a squat hold. But I knew with how I was feeling, there wasn’t any worry that I would get through all 3. We had a 400, 300, and 200-meter row. And between each row, we had good mornings which are similar to deadlifts without a weight. In the second block, we started with small crew rows. We were paired with the person next to us and we were supposed to row together. I had the person I was paired with be the leader since I knew I would have to take a break at some point. But I only needed one break during a 2 1/2-minute crew row which is much better than I thought I would do. After the crew row, we did the same all-outs we had for cardio. I did better with those since they were short.

On the floor, both blocks had 2 mini-blocks and the first mini-block each time used the mini-bands. In the first block, we started with hip bridges and torso rotations using the mini-band. And then we had lateral step-ups and low rows. The second block started with toe reaches and single-leg bridges (which I did as regular hip bridges). And then we had shoulder presses and step-ups with bicep curls. I lowered the bench so I could do the step-ups. I didn’t go too heavy with any of the weights I used, but I’m glad I did try all the exercises as much as I could.

I was feeling almost the same on Thursday as I did on Wednesday, so it was pretty rough. But I still pushed through and did everything that I could.

For cardio, the first block was rounds of a 2-minute push pace and a 1-minute base pace. And the push pace had increasing inclines/resistance levels so each time it got harder. The second block had rounds of a 1-minute all-out and a 1-minute recovery and the all-outs had increasing inclines/resistance levels. I did get to use resistance levels higher than I normally would, but I was already struggling on the bike so I couldn’t really tell how much harder it was than normal.

On the rower, we were timed along with cardio. We did 2-minute rows in the first block and then had a minute to do forward and back hops (which I did as shuffle steps). I was happy to see that I was able to do the row without stopping each time and I actually got further with my distance each time. And in the second block, we had 1-minute all-out rows and then we were supposed to do jumping jacks. But I was getting really nauseous after the rows and I ended up using that minute to rest and let the nausea pass.

And on the floor, we had 2 blocks and each block had 2 exercises so we were supposed to go slowly and use heavy weights. In the first block, we had step-downs to toe taps and single-arm high rows. For the step-downs, I lowered the bench and did the first round without weights to make sure I had enough balance for it. But I did use light weights after that and it was a good challenge for me. And the second block had single-arm chest presses and crunches. Fortunately, those exercises weren’t too bad for me.

This week is the start of Hell Week and I should be earning my shirt during my workouts this week. But I also know I might have worse pain and nausea this week as well. So there’s a chance it will be a double Hell Week for me. I’ll just have to see how it goes.

This Is A Lot Of Stuff Coming Together (or Another Post About Budgeting And Spending)

I just wrote about how there are things I’ve been buying for my new place and how I need to make sure I don’t buy too much. I did mention how I wanted to be careful about what I spend because I could see how things could get out of control. And because I’m trying to buy quality products, those tend to be more expensive. I know that buying something that costs a bit more will be worth it in the long run because things will last longer, but it’s tempting to buy something cheaper just to save some money.

I also have written quite a bit about budgeting and how I’ve gotten out of my habit of using different budgeting apps. I do still need to figure out what will work for me because I’m not sure if any apps I’ve used before will be the right thing. I might just have to do something really basic like using a spreadsheet or even handwriting stuff. I just haven’t felt as motivated because I’ve been in a better financial spot than I was in the past and I haven’t had to worry about affording things the way I have in the past.

But I think those things combined have really come to a head this month. I have had some new recurring expenses to deal with that I think I’m still getting used to. I also had to pay my property taxes and I decided to pay for the full year at once instead of splitting it into 2 payments. I also have a few other big expenses this month such as my homeowner insurance that I haven’t paid for. All of that plus my shopping has made my expenses this month significantly higher than normal. But because I’m not doing my usual budgeting work, I don’t think I was aware of how much higher it was until I had to log into my bank and I saw the numbers in front of me.

I’m fine and I have the money to cover what I need to cover, but I’ve realized that what I felt like I had saved up wasn’t as high as it used to be. I know that paying the property taxes was a lot of this (which is almost like paying a year of rent at one time), but it was also some of the things I bought this month that I might not have thought as much about. I used to be a lot better about comparing prices for things that I buy and being willing to buy from different places if it will save me enough. I don’t drive around and waste gas to buy stuff, but if something is cheaper at CVS than on Amazon, I would drive those few minutes to get it even though ordering from Amazon is easier. I’ve gotten lazy with buying stuff and just buying things wherever it’s convenient. I know that saving a few dollars here and there won’t make a huge difference, but it will make some difference.

I think this was the reality check that I needed. Even though I knew my expenses were higher than normal, I don’t think I knew exactly how much more it was. And it really made me start thinking about what I really need versus what I want and can wait for. And I want to be more aware of the random things I get because $20 might not seem like a lot but if I have 5 random $20 purchases a month, that’s $100. I don’t think I’m buying frivolous stuff that I didn’t need, but I do know that I have been buying stuff that I could have waited a bit longer for.

Of course, I’m saying all this before I do some furniture shopping with my parents. I know there’s a good chance I’ll be spending more than I would like this weekend because we are looking for some bigger items that I haven’t been able to get yet. But I’m also really thinking about what I really need at this time and what I might be able to spread out purchases over time. For example, I know we will be looking at patio furniture, but maybe I could just get one thing that I want, and then at a later date, I can buy something else to go with it. I’m not sure if that will end up happening, especially since I’m looking at sets of things. But at least I can be a bit more mindful of what I’m getting.

And as I’ve said multiple times already, I need to find a new way to do some budget planning and this was another gut check that I really need to start trying new systems even if they only last a month or two because I don’t want to be this unaware of my spending again. I’m lucky now that it’s not going to cause me any issues, but if this happens again I don’t know if my financial situation will be the same. And I know what it was like before and I don’t want to repeat that situation.

I Feel Like I’m Always Buying Stuff (or Some Small And Big Upgrades)

When I moved, there were obviously a lot of things I needed to buy. I tried to limit what I bought and wanted to find ways to repurpose what I already owned, but I found out that wasn’t always working for me. I would have loved to have not bought as much as I did, but also I know that the things I got made my place feel more like home and less like an unsettled space. For example, I loved my old couch but it felt so weird in my new living room and it always made it feel unfinished because there was so much extra space. Getting a couch that fits the space really made a difference. And even though there are other things I would like to upgrade, if they are usable and fit the space, I’m trying to wait to get them unless I find an amazing deal. I know I have spent a lot of money in the past few months, and I need to slow that down.

But there are 2 categories of things that I feel like I’m still buying a bit of. First are things that I didn’t have in the old place that I wanted for the new one. And the other are things that are cheap improvements or upgrades (although those can add up and be a lot of money if I get too many of them). I’m still not trying to rush into any purchases, even if they are cheap ones, because I know that’s a waste. But I’ve gotten a few more new things this past week that are helping to bring my place even more together.

There are a lot of things I have wanted to get for my guest room/office. The biggest one will be the bookcase murphy bed that I will get eventually. I thought I would get that before the end of this year, but I think it will be pushed back until next year. I have decided to hire someone to put it together, and I need to find a good handyman who will do that and make sure I budget for that as well. I also think that I would like to get a new desk eventually, but I’m in no rush to replace the one I have now. It’s just something on my mind whenever I’m looking online or at different stores to get ideas. But one thing I knew I wanted to try to find soon for that room was some additional seating. I like the idea of also making the room feel like a den or reading area since the bed I will put in there will mainly be a bookcase and only rarely used as a bed. I found a style of chair that I liked, but the chairs were pretty pricey so I wasn’t sure when I would get them. And I wanted to get two chairs just to make things look balanced, so that added to the cost.

When I was doing some online searching the other day, I was looking at the chair I was thinking I would get and decided to try to see what else was recommended if I was considering that chair. And the store suggested almost the same chair, but this one came as a pair. It was the same price as the single chair I had been looking at, so basically, each chair was half the cost. I decided that was worth it and I didn’t mind the differences, so I ordered them. And I got them and put them together the other day.

They weren’t as easy to put together as I thought they would be because the instructions were missing some steps. So when I put the first one together, it took a few tries to get everything right. But the second chair was much easier to do and now I have some nice seating that I can use in that room or in my living room if I need more chairs. And I think once I get more stuff in that room, it won’t look as stark and bare. But that will come in time.

I’m also getting ready for my family to visit me this weekend and part of what we will be doing is working on my backyard. I needed to go get some plants for a planter my dad is bringing for me, and I decided to get that plus see what other plants looked interesting. I don’t have the best track record of keeping plants alive, but at least they aren’t too expensive so if they don’t make it I didn’t waste too much money. But I only wanted to get one additional plant since I wanted to see how I did with taking care of it. I looked around the garden area of Home Depot and ended up finding these peppers that looked cool. I won’t eat these peppers, but at least I think they will add some color to my patio.

I hope I can keep these alive, but if I can’t, at least they will be nice for a month or so. But I’m really going to try to take care of them and I did get some of those watering globes so I can make sure that they are getting the right amount of water. I know that I probably over or underwater plants I have, so regulating that should help me not kill them.

I’m sure there will be more things and upgrades I buy in the near future. I know I’ll be doing some shopping when my parents are here, and those are things I have planned for. But I also know that if there are inexpensive things that I see that I know will improve my space, I will probably also be getting unplanned things too.

New Things To Think About With My Acting Career (or I Need To Plan Things More)

I’ve written several times about how I want to get back into acting more. Things really came to a standstill for me the past few years, but I also used that time to get things a bit more settled in my life. I’m in a better place financially, which is important since so many things with acting cost money. And I think having a little bit of a break did help me really think about what I want to do and how I want to accomplish it.

I still want to get back into taking an acting class and have been looking into some options near me. I haven’t found one that fits in with my schedule or that I like yet, but I’m making an effort to find something because I know it would be good for me. I also miss the camaraderie you have being in a regular class. But because I have limited time after work and classes can be expensive, I don’t want to join one just to be in a class. I want to make sure I’m in a class that fits my needs as well as a class where I fit in with the others in the group. There have been a few people who have talked about starting up our own casual scene study class, and if one of those happens it might be a good match for me since they tend to be less expensive and very supportive. But since I don’t know if or when those might happen, I’m still looking into more traditional classes as well. And hopefully, I’ll find something that works for me soon.

I also know that I might need to start looking for a new agent. This is a longer thing I need to think about, but I’m not sure if my current situation is the best one for me or if I’m the best client for them. I know that with the pandemic, things have been weird. So I want to start conversations with my agent again before making any decisions because it’s not easy to find a new agent. And just like how I feel about classes, I don’t want to make any rash decisions. This is something that might take a lot of time to figure out, and I’m not in any rush.

But whether or not I want to look for a new agent, one thing I know I need to do is get new headshots. And I’ve been saying this for a while and I haven’t done it yet. I’ve talked to a few friends who are photographers to figure out who I’d like to take photos with, but now I’m realizing I might need to plan this out better too. There’s no guarantee the new medication will help me lose weight, but if I’m lucky it will make a difference for me. And if I lose weight, I will need to keep getting new headshots because my look will be changing. Headshots are not cheap (or cheap headshots are not usually good), so this is another thing that really has to be thought about. If I do new headshots now and then need new ones in a month or two, that can be expensive. Maybe I need to keep the ones I have for now until my appearance is different enough and then finally do the new ones. And maybe I can make a plan with a photographer friend to have sessions with fewer looks if I will be doing them more frequently. For example, if they normally offer a 4-look session, maybe I could split it into 2 sessions and pay a little bit more than half each time. I haven’t asked anyone yet because I want to have a better plan in mind before asking.

All of these things are things I feel I need in order to get my acting career off again. I know that I could still get auditions and book work with the headshots I have now and through my current agent. But I also know that having outdated headshots aren’t helping me much. Plus, I have used those headshots for a while now so a refresh would be nice and something different for casting directors to see when I’m submitted for roles.

I’m not going to let not doing these things stop me from continuing to pursue acting, but I also know that I’m probably not going to have a lot of success without them either. So I need to make a plan, even if it’s a 1 or 2 year plan, and get back into things with a purpose. I have been putting this off enough, and I can at least take the first few steps toward making these changes and then get into them more when the timing is right.

An Evening Of Medical Testing (or Getting More Stuff Done)

Between some of the doctor appointments I’ve already had and some that I have coming up, I’ve had a few different medical tests that I’ve needed to get done. Nothing too crazy, but things that could potentially take up some time depending on how busy the hospital was. Mainly, I needed to do some blood work to check some levels and get a hip x-ray to prepare to see a new orthopedic doctor. Unfortunately, neither of these things are tests that you can schedule and you just have to go as a walk-in. I was a bit surprised to find that out with the x-rays, but I guess when they aren’t that crazy they don’t book you in.

I have waited for medical tests in the past where things took significantly longer than they should have. I had one MRI where I waited an extra 90 minutes because of some emergency patients that came in. Of course, I understand that, but it also makes it tough to schedule when to do things around work. And I have had to change up my work schedule quite a bit for all the appointments I have booked. So I wanted to try to get this done without disrupting my schedule.

Fortunately, both offices for these tests are open a bit later than when you can do regular appointments. I knew it might be a rush to get in to get them done, but I decided to go for it this past Friday. And I figured if I could only do one thing, I could go back another day after work to do the other.

But this went a lot easier than I expected. For the blood work, I was taken back right away. I did black out, as I always do, but that didn’t make anything take longer. And it was only 3 vials of blood, so that didn’t take as long as my last big blood work did. And as soon as they were done and bandaged my arm, I headed over to the imaging department and hoped they could fit me in for the x-ray. There was a bit of confusion about what time they closed, but they were still open when I got there and I checked in with no issues. They let me know that I would be called when it was my time to be brought back, and I sat in the waiting room and got my phone out to catch up on social media.

I probably was waiting for less than 5 minutes before I was called back. These x-rays were very basic ones for my hips. I’ve done some that were more intense with a lot of weird positioning to see specific issues. But I guess since this is a new doctor, they didn’t order those, and I only had to do two different positions for the x-rays. And because I knew I was going to try to get my x-rays done, I made sure I wore clothes that didn’t have any metal on them. So I didn’t even have to get undressed and into a gown to do the x-rays. I just got on the table, they positioned me into the two positions they needed for the images, and I was out of there!

I really was expecting things to be a lot worse or more time-consuming, but I was done with both tests in under 20 minutes. It really was simple to get it done and I didn’t have to wait for other people to be done before it was my turn. I know I might have lucked out into this because I’ve done medical tests on weekends when it should have been easy but then things got delayed unexpectedly. I’m just glad that it went smoothly, I didn’t have that many issues, and I can continue on with all the other doctor appointments I have coming up.
