Finding Ways To Treat Myself (or I Wish Money Wasn’t An Issue)

This post is similar to what I’ll be writing when I do my recap of how my monthly challenge went, but it’s a bit different. I’ve been working on reconnecting to myself and doing things that make me happy. And as I’ve been working on that, I’ve discovered one area where I’ve been not really able to work on things. And that is doing things that feel special to me or treating myself.

It may seem like I treat myself a lot because I do fun things. But most of those things are something I’ve saved up for to do (like my Pantages tickets or my Disneyland pass) or things that I get to do for free or at a discount because either I review them on here (and I will always disclose when I get a discount or free item for a review) or because I have a connection with someone who can help me out (like when I got to go to the friends and family day at Face Haus). But beyond the things that have been planned for a while or that I have a connection to, I really don’t seem to go outside of the set things I spend money on.

Of course, a lot of this has to do with lack of funding. If I had unlimited money (or significantly more money), I would not hesitate to spend on things I wanted to do. I’ve been wanting to get my house professionally cleaned recently. I don’t need a weekly or even monthly cleaning person, but I’d love to do a deep clean from someone who knows what they are doing once or twice a year. This doesn’t have to be expensive, but it’s not in my budget right now. I’d also love to either buy fresh flowers or have a delivery of fresh flowers on a regular basis. I have some friends who do this and it always seems so nice to have flowers in your home. Plus, flowers always seem to put a smile on your face, even when you ordered them for yourself. And then there are all the fun monthly/quarterly subscription boxes that so many people do and love. I have a list of ones I’d want to try if I could afford it.

All of those things are more of luxury splurges because I could be fine without any of them. But then there are the more basic splurges that I’ve been not doing either. I don’t get pedicures regularly, but I try to do it a few times a year (I have issues with my toenails sometimes and a pedicure is cheaper than an appointment with a podiatrist). I’ve been saying for almost 3 months that I was going to set aside time to go get a pedicure but I haven’t done it yet. Money is a small part of why I’ve been putting it off, but I also just don’t feel at times that I deserve it or should do it. It’s the same with buying clothes. I would love to buy the rare nicer piece of clothing that doesn’t feel as much as throwaway clothing. I’ve got some things picked out that I’d like to get and I haven’t purchased them. This one is a bit about money but also a bit about wanting to wait until I’m a different size to buy stuff. Either way, I’m delaying doing something that I’d like to do.

Obviously I can’t just go out and buy all the things I want and do all the things on my list. I do need to budget and find where the money is in my budget to spend. And some of these things may need to be something I save a few dollars a month for and then later this year I can do it. But I’m also looking at adding another job to what I’m doing. I’ve got one job that should be very part-time and won’t pay a ton of money, but I think it will cover at least my cable and power bills each month. It should be starting in the next month or two and I’m excited about it. And I’m meeting with someone soon who knows me through the podcast I work for and wanted to see if there is something that they can hire me to do. They don’t have a specific job for me to apply for, but they wanted to see if we could work together.

If I have these new jobs, they will probably fit into my schedule with my current ones. And I plan on doing them all if possible. I could use all the additional income toward my debt and then once that is eventually paid off I could reevaluate things. The priority is to pay off my debt as soon as possible, but I also know I need to allow some flexibility to have some fun money. But until I have that extra income, I think my list for how I want to spend the fun money is going to have to just stay a list for now.

Bringing More Food Back Into My Diet (or Staying Vegetarian For Now)

This past week was my first post-cleanse week. Right when I started the cleanse, my plan was to have a steak on my first post-cleanse day. I was craving meat like crazy and that seemed like a good way to celebrate doing a cleanse (and being vegan) for 28 days.

But as the days in the cleanse went on, that plan started to change. I am still in the weight loss challenge at Orangetheory (1 week left to go with that) and my need to have a steak right away went away. Plus, I’ve got an amazing trip coming up next weekend with my mom and sister-in-law and my mom made reservations at a fancy steakhouse. I’m sure that that steak will be so much better than anything that I can make, so I’m going to wait.

My first post-cleanse grocery trip was a little overwhelming. Suddenly I could get whatever I wanted. If I wanted ice cream, I could have it again. If I wanted frozen mac and cheese (one of my favorite Trader Joes splurges), I could buy it. But I tried to focus on eating similarly to the cleanse plan.

I did get some frozen turkey burgers and frozen tilapia to keep in my freezer, but right now I don’t know if I’ll be eating them anytime soon. But they seemed like good “emergency” meal things to have. But I’m pretty much vegetarian at home right now.

The main things that I brought back into my diet were eggs and dairy. I’ve been eating eggs (1 whole egg and 2 egg whites) for breakfast most days. As much as I wanted to keep just having fruit for breakfast, that never satisfied me. I need protein in the mornings. I usually scramble the eggs up with some spinach and onions and top it with a 1/4 cup of cheese (which is the actual serving size and not just me dumping some cheese on top). I also added some greek yogurt back into my diet. I love to use it instead of sour cream for baked potatoes (my mom and dad now do that too). So I had it on Saturday night with some sautéed potatoes and onions. It was so yummy!

I also had a meal out this week. When I was in San Diego, I went out for dinner. There weren’t a ton of choices on the menu that seemed like good choices and almost everything had meat on it. I’m sure I could have asked for things to be made without meat, but the menu said “no substitutions” all over it. I feel good about my choice of Huevos Rancheros, but my body did have a big jump on the scale the next day. Not being able to control the oil, seasonings, and salt is not good for me as far as losing weight.

I tried not to freak out about the weight gain. I knew it must have been from salt in the food. But I had some good clean meals the few days after and that weight gain is gone.

Clean Eating Dinner

My weight now is just under where it was at the end of the cleanse. So I’m still heading in the right direction even with the weight gain from Monday’s dinner.

I don’t know if I’ll be adding meat back into my diet this next week before my trip. I have a full day tomorrow where I won’t be home from 11am until maybe 10 or 11pm and then the next day is the Oscar party (I’m hoping that I can make good choices while I’m at the party).

But the main thing I’m doing (which is one of the lessons I learned at the end of the cleanse), is that it’s ok for me to have a treat or splurge every once in a while. It’s safer for me if those treats or splurges don’t happen in my house so that they don’t become a regular part of my diet. And when I’m not out or enjoying a treat, I need to focus on good clean foods at home. That way I can balance it all out.

It’s taken 31 years and a lot of different diets, but eating right without being super restrictive is finally making sense to me.

A Visit From The Chocolate Fairy (or Thank You Crunch Bars!)

A while back, I attended the Nestle Crunch Birthday Party (that had some amazing cupcakes!). I guess they remembered me because I came home from work one day to see this on my doorstep.

Nestle Crunch Girl Scout Cookie Bars!

I’ve heard of them before (and a lot of people were talking about them at the cupcake event) so I was super excited to try them for myself.

I brought my mom some of the samples when I saw her at Mother’s Day (she hasn’t given me her review yet). And I brought the rest of them to work where my co-workers and I got to enjoy them.

I personally tried the Peanut Butter Creme and Thin Mint bars. I love peanut butter and thought that bar was delicious. It was nice and light. And the Thin Mint bar tasted exactly like a Thin Mint (perfect for my Girl Scout cookie withdrawal).

Two of my co-workers tried the Thin Mint as well as the Caramel and Coconut ones. Both of them love Thin Mint cookies and thought that that bar was amazing. But they both said that they were pleasantly surprised how much they liked the Caramel and Coconut ones. While it was tough for them both to pick a favorite, they both went with Caramel and Coconut.

All of the samples that I got in the mail went very quickly at my work (I think my co-workers were pretty happy that I was willing to share). The cookie bars won’t be in grocery stores until the summer (June until September). However you are able to pre-order some now through the Nestle Crunch Facebook page.

I’m planning on getting some to have as a treat over the summer. One thing that I didn’t get a chance to try is freezing the Thin Mint cookie bars. I love frozen Thin Mints (it’s the best way to eat them in my opinion). I’m curious if I can freeze the cookie bars for a similar experience. Anyone from Crunch reading this and able to answer me?

Either way, thank you Crunch for introducing me to this great treat! I only wish they weren’t going to be a limited time thing!

Rita’s Ice (or Trying An East Coast Food In The South Bay)

Over the weekend, I was invited to a preview of Rita’s Ice. I said yes first, and then looked up what Rita’s Ice was afterwards.

Rita’s Ice is water ice and custard. It’s pretty big on the east coast, but until this week, there were no stores on the west coast. But now there is one in Redondo Beach!

Rita’s Ice is in a shopping center, so there was lots of free parking (a huge thing for me!). I walked right up and it was nice and crowded for the preview inside.

I got a menu of what was available.

And while I was deciding, there were a ton of free samples to test out.

This was a Misto with strawberry ice and vanilla custard.

This is the lemonade ice (which was amazing!).

I also tried a chocolate custard milkshake, but I finished it before I took a picture.

There were a ton of other ice flavors to try, but I didn’t want to get full before ordering.

I decided to get a Gelati with strawberry ice and vanilla custard.

Honestly, everything I tried was delicious! If you haven’t had water ice, it’s tough to describe the texture. It’s like a mix between a slushy and snow cone, but a softer texture (if that makes any sense).

I loved my Gelati! I ate all the custard off the top first and then worked my way down the water ice. I wasn’t able to finish it, so I dug out the custard from the bottom and mixed it in with the ice and had a few more bites. Sadly to say, I ended up throwing some of it out because I couldn’t finish (and this isn’t exactly a treat to enjoy while driving).

Even though this location isn’t the most geographically desirable for me (I’m hoping they will open one up closer to my house), I know I’ll be back, especially over the summer. When it’s super hot out, one of my guilty pleasures is having frozen yogurt or a slushy for dinner. I know it isn’t the healthiest, but when it’s so hot outside you can’t think about eating, you have to cool down somehow.

So if you are in LA, I highly recommend making the trip down to Redondo Beach to try Rita’s Ice. Maybe you loved it on the east coast and want to have it again, or maybe you are like me and have never tried it. But in my opinion, this is a great treat to have in LA.
