Relaxation (or Taking Some Time To Myself)

I’ve been busy with a lot of things lately. Between work, workouts, acting, and other stuff I feel like my days are getting filled up really quickly. This is awesome and I’m so happy about it, but sometimes I realize that I need to take a step back and relax for a bit. I’m finally getting better at realizing when my body feels like it’s getting to a breaking point, so when I started to feel like that at the beginning of this week I took some time to myself. I’m glad that I didn’t get to the point where I got exhausted and needed a few days to get back to my usual self. This time, I really only spent 2 afternoons being selfish and doing things for myself and I feel back to normal already.

I ended up canceling plans that I had made this Monday to do some stuff that I needed to do but had been putting off. Even though my plans were more fun, getting stuff crossed off my to-do list is really nice too! None of the things on my to-do list were urgent, so I had been putting them off for a while. I think knowing that I should be doing something but not was causing a bit of stress in my life. So getting those done relived some stress and made the rest of the things I needed to get done not feel as overwhelming.

I’ve also rediscovered my love for the library. I used to use the library all the time. My original e-reader was a Sony because at the time that was the only one that could get library e-books. But then I almost forgot about the library and I let my library card expire (did you know they could do that?). So a few weeks ago, I went down to the local library branch to get a new library card so I could start enjoying library books again. I’ve checked out a bunch of stuff lately. It’s so easy to get library books on my Kindle (much easier than my old e-reader) so I’ve gotten a ton of new books lately.

I feel so silly that I haven’t used the library lately, but now I’m back and obsessed! After running the errands I had to run on Monday, my afternoon and evening were spent reading and that was such a perfect way to spend the day. I still have books that I buy, but I’m so glad that the library is pretty well stocked with e-books so I can curb that spending habit. I know I’ve spent a lot of money on books (I love them so much!) and if I could limit my book spending just to the books I love so much and know I’ll be reading over and over again, that will help me budget better. I still can’t get over how this wasn’t something I thought of sooner, but at least know I’m on the right track to reducing my spending habits without reducing my reading material.

I also spent time getting ready for my upcoming trip for Rayshell’s wedding. I had already gotten a dress to wear and some cute and comfortable shoes. But I realized that if I was wearing open toed shoes at a nice event my feet probably should look nice. So on Tuesday after work, I went to my favorite pedicure place and splurged on a pedicure. My last pedicure was last spring, so I think that I had deserved to get another one. And I found the perfect color to put on my toes for a wedding!

Pedicure

I’ve still got a couple of other things that I need to do before this weekend, but there’s nothing that feels so big that it will be tough to complete. I want to be able to enjoy my weekend (which includes the wedding and a 5K race) and not have to stress about things at home or things that need to be done. Most of the things on my to-do list now are ideas that I’d like to work on (like reorganizing my desk and cleaning out my workout clothes drawer), but they won’t affect me if they don’t happen this week or month. I would like to work on checking things off more often so they don’t build up like they have. That’s just something else I need to work on in my self-improvement so I can maybe start treating these relaxation days and rewards for getting stuff done!

Pre-Thanksgiving Pampering (or Trying To Get Everything Done)

Thanksgiving is pretty much here already. That’s insane! I’ll be heading to San Diego this year to join my family, and before I go I have so much stuff to get done!

I have some of my usual craziness, but for some reason this upcoming weekend is one of the most packed weekends of the year for me. And besides getting things packed before I drive, I have some food and crafts to finish up (I’ll post about those during Thanksgiving week).

But yesterday after work, I realized that if I wanted to get any of the beauty things done that I wanted to do, it was my last chance before I drive down.

So as soon as work was done for me at 3pm, I hopped in my car and drove to Brentwood where the Benefit store is that I get my eyebrows done at. Fortunately, you make appointments online so I knew that I would get in when I needed to.

Getting my brows done pretty much feels like maintenance to me. I’ve been getting them done since I was 14. And when I don’t get them done, I have a pretty bad unibrow. But at least at Benefit they try to make it fun. They always do a little makeup for you before you leave and while you are waiting there is a ton of makeup to look at and play with.

I actually needed to purchase a few things, and I found that they had a holiday gift pack that was cheaper than the 2 things I needed. So I got what I needed plus a little extra (some of which I will be giving to my mom).

After my brows were done, I got back into my car and drove about 20 blocks to the nail salon. I had also made an appointment for my pedicure (I don’t like doing walk ins anymore because you never know if they can get you in or not). I hadn’t had a pedicure since before my birthday and the blister on my foot is healing very nicely. So I figured I was due and wanted cute toes for Thanksgiving (although I’ve realized since that all the shoes I will be packing are closed toe).

When it’s wintertime and I get a pedicure, I try to go for some out there colors. I’ve done yellow and various neons before, but this time I found a really cute icy blue that seemed perfect for winter.

Now that I feel beautiful and girly again (it’s funny how getting your eyebrows done and a pedicure can make you feel like you got a total makeover), I’m superficially ready for Thanksgiving. This weekend will be some shopping trips and getting things prepared for my drive as soon as I’m done with work on Tuesday.

The countdown to the major family event of the year is on!

Burke Williams San Francisco (or Sharing One Of My New Favorite Places)

After the dress fitting and buying last-minute swimsuits, Krystle, Anna, and I headed over to the last part (and in my opinion best part!) of our girls day: the spa!

I had connected with some people from Burke Williams at the event I went to last month, and they invited me to come and check out the spa in San Francisco!

The San Francisco Burke Williams is located on the 5th floor of the Westfield Mall conveniently only a few blocks away from the dress fitting!

At the top of the escalators, we saw the spa.

We went though the main doors…

and seriously entered paradise!

We got to the spa the recommended hour before our first treatments, but I feel like we should have gotten there way earlier as there was so much we could do!

First of all, here is our before picture outside of the Ladies section of the spa.

Inside, there was the locker room area (with fabulous robe and slippers waiting for us inside). We changed into our swimsuits and robes, and headed to the women’s only whirlpool.

Besides the whirlpool in there, there was a cold misting room, sauna, and steam room. All of this was ladies only, so that was really nice!

We started out in the whirlpool, which was wonderful! There was cucumber fruit water right next to it, so we enjoyed that while we relaxed. Then we checked out the cold misting room next. It was a bit cold for us, but it would have been really nice if we had gone from the sauna or steam room into there. Next was the steam room. They had chilled wash cloths right outside, so we grabbed some and headed in.

The steam room was super hot (which is how I like it), and the 3 of us just sat back, relaxed, and put the chilled wash cloths on our faces.

After a while, we decided to head back into the whirlpool until it was time for our first appointments.

Just before 3pm, we headed outside of the ladies area into the co-ed waiting room. Krystle was taken back for her first treatment (Emilee’s Intrigue) and then I was taken back for my first treatment (Parafango Treatment). Anna didn’t have an appointment until 5pm, so she went back to the ladies area and hung out in the steam room and whirlpool some more.

My treatment was beyond anything I could have expected! First, I got a dry exfoliation. Then I had a salt scrub. After that, Parafango mud (similar to paraffin) was coated on my body on top of the salt scrub. Then I flipped over and had it done on the other side. Next, I was wrapped in a thermal blanket while I got an express facial! Once the mask was on for my facial, I was unwrapped, and escorted back to the ladies area so I could shower off all the mud and salt. I also washed my hair quickly since I was advised not to shower after my treatment was over. Finally, after showering I was escorted back to the treatment room where I was moisturized.

Seriously, my skin has never looked or felt so amazing! They recommend you get this treatment 4 times a year, and I’d love to be able to do that. Even now, several days later, my skin feels amazing!

After my treatment was done, I met Krystle and Anna back in the waiting room. Krystle looked so relaxed and calm after her treatment. I decided to use this break between treatments to dry my hair. Inside of the ladies area was a nice vanity area.

There were hair dryers, flat irons, curling irons, and tons of clean hair brushes to use. I quickly dried my hair (I styled it later when I was getting dressed), and went back out to the waiting area to meet up with the other girls.

At 5pm, Anna had a facial and Krystle and I got pedicures. I love getting pedicures and this was pretty fancy. We got heated blankets and neck rolls and the massage chair was so much better than the one at the nail salon I normally go to! It was the perfect addition to our earlier treatments.

After we were all done, we met up again and started to get ready to leave. I took advantage of using the flat iron in the vanity area so I would have to do it back at my brother and Krystle’s place. I had also packed some of my makeup to put on as well. That way, all I had to do to get ready for dinner that night was change my clothes.

Sadly, it was time to leave after that (we had dinner reservations). We all looked so relaxed on the way out.

I’m seriously considering becoming a member at the Burke Williams by my house. You get discounted treatments and a free treatment each month. Even though I try to pamper myself every once in a while, this was a whole different experience. I normally go for the cheap options, but I learned that sometimes spending a little more means getting a whole lot more!

I still have the free facial that I won to the Burke Williams by me, so I’m thinking of using that near my birthday. And Krystle and I have already decided that we are going to make going to Burke Williams something we do twice a year together (around her birthday and around my birthday which are about 6 months apart).

Thank you Burke Williams for inviting us to the spa so we could have an amazing girls day. This was the perfect end to the day that we had!

FTC Disclosure: I was given one free treatment and a discounted treatment by Burke Williams and The Ace Agency to review for this post. My guests also received discounted treatments. All opinions written were my own and were not influenced by Burke Williams or The Ace Agency

Running Into An Ex-BFF (or How I Survived My Pedicure)

Yesterday, I went with my friend Stacia to go get a pedicure and eyebrow waxing in preparation for Thanksgiving. I’ve been going to the same nail salon since I moved to LA over 11 years ago, and I was excited to bring Stacia there for the first time.

As we were pulling in to the parking lot, I was telling her about my ex-best friend and how we used to always go to this nail salon together. I was friends with this person for 8 years, from freshman year at LMU until about 3 years ago (our friendship ended on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in 2009). To this day, I’m not exactly sure why our friendship ended. But to be honest, looking back now, I feel like we had outgrown our friendship.

For the last 3 years, I’ve never seen my ex-best friend. The people who work at the nail salon always mention how we miss each other by a few hours a lot of times. But as I was parking, I noticed my ex-best friend. She was getting out of the car, so I could only assume that she was going into the nail salon. I was pretty upset to know that I was putting myself into an uncomfortable situation, but I took a deep breath and went inside.

As we were picking our colors, we were inches away from my ex-best friend and her mom, and either they didn’t notice us or they chose to ignore us. I didn’t say anything. But as we were getting seated in our pedicure chairs, my ex-best friend’s mom saw me and came over to say hello and give me a hug. I was polite and honestly was happy to see her. But I didn’t ask about my ex-best friend or anything. We all went back to our chairs, and that was the end of our interaction.

I held it together during the pedicure, but I did wait until my ex-best friend and her mom left the salon before I got up to leave. But once I was in my car, I broke down. I surprised myself by crying, I thought that I wouldn’t care if I saw her again. But what it came down to was the fact that my ex-best friend didn’t even acknowledge me. I’m sure her mom mentioned that she just said hello to me so she had to know that I was there. And I know that I was also in the wrong for not saying anything.

It’s just so sad that there is nothing left there. This was my best friend for so long. She knew so much about me. We had a tradition that we could only pick pedicure colors that had cute names, and I still do that today (the color I got yesterday is called “Leading Lady” and is a red sparkly color). She is the person who was there when I met t-shirt guy (a story for another blog).

I have to focus on not what was lost, but who I have become since then. I’ve become a much more confident person. I have made so many friends that push me to want to be a better person. I have come clean about my credit card debt and my eating disorder (I never was fully honest with my ex-best friend about either). I’m so much happier now than I was then. And I really do hope that my ex-best friend is too.

And if she is reading this (which I doubt, but you never know), I’m sorry our friendship ended. But I hope that you agree with me now that it was for the best. And I’m sorry I didn’t say hi to you at the nail salon. I was so shocked to see you, and only thought more about it once I was out of the situation. But I do hope that you are happy. And I hope that maybe next time that we run into each other, one of us will have the courage and guts to say hello and not make it as awkward of a situation as yesterday was.
