I haven’t done a lot of work at my new place yet. I have done some cleaning and I have done some testing of different paint colors. But that’s really about it so far. I have done a lot of planning and thought of ideas, but since this is going to be a bigger project than what I have done in my rental places in the past, I won’t be doing a majority of the work.
I’m very grateful my parents helped me by interviewing different contractors and finding a good one who will be able to manage the project since I won’t be there every day. The remodel has grown from the original list a bit since now the plan is to do most things before I move in, but it’s still cosmetic changes. Right now, we are waiting for the HOA to approve the plans, but hopefully, that is done soon so the work can get started, and then I can start planning more for my move next year!
But before the big work gets started, I wanted to get whatever I could do ahead of time. But this is really limited since most of the work is either too big or it needs to be done after other work is done. Even with those limitations, I did find a few different little projects I was able to get done when I go over there after work this past week.
The first thing I did was in the second closet. In my current place, I have a utility room that I use as storage and a pantry. But there isn’t something like that in the condo. So I decided to turn half of a closet into a storage area. I will be getting something from The Container Store or somewhere similar to build in a storage system with shelves and possibly drawers. But in that closet, there was one closet rod that went from side to side across the top and another that was just a half rod with a shelf. I decided to remove the half rod so I could turn that half into the storage area. I was doing this after work when it was dark and there aren’t any lights in that room yet, so I had to do it with the flashlight on my phone. Some of the screws were really stuck in there, but I managed to get it down.
My dad is going to help me fix the holes that were left behind, but you might not even notice them once we build the shelves in there.
And the other project I did recently was for what will be my closet. In my future room, there are 3 doors in the room. The door from the hallway to the room, the door to the bathroom, and the door to the closet. Because of where things are, the doors to the hallway and closet hit each other and it wasn’t easy to open either of them. So I decided to try to take the closet door off since I don’t necessarily need one. My dad said he would help me, but I’m stubborn and figured I’d see if I could do it alone.
I did have to brace myself against the door so it didn’t fall on me and the door is now laying in the middle of the room, but I was able to do it!
We may have to put the closet door up for when they are painting things so the door is painted too, but I’m glad I did this because I know for sure now that I will be keeping the door off when I move in. It just opens up the space a lot more and I won’t have to worry about the doors bumping into each other and scuffing things. And I’m used to having to keep my closet clean with how the setup is at my place now, so having it open in the condo will be fine.
If I can find other fun little things I can do, I’ll totally do them. But I think I might have hit a roadblock with the projects I can do and I’ll just have to wait until I’m doing things to get my new place ready to move in.
