Paintball (or I’m Not Sure If I Want To Do That Again)

On Saturday, I played paintball for the very first time. My friend Emily had gotten a deal for it and had invited me to come along.

I’ve shot a gun before when I was in summer camp as a kid, but that was a long time ago. And I had been warned by some people who have played paintball in the past that I should be very careful. It can be painful and the guns can be heavy.

The paintball place was out in Santa Clarita, which is just under an hour drive from my house with no traffic. I got there and was immediately intimidated.

There were some serious looking people there! Some were in army clothes and had all their own gear. I just showed up in a long-sleeved shirt and pants to cover as much skin as possible.

Our deal included the rental of the gun and protective gear. I have to say that I looked pretty awesome and tough in the outfit.

IMG_2134

By the way, the army pants that I’m wearing were rented from the paintball place. I didn’t want to ruin my own pants and they gave me another layer of protection.

We went to go play a game. What we didn’t realize was that we were going to be placed on teams with other people. So our group of 4 got split up into 2 and 2. And the other people on both teams all looked very very serious and like they were ready to shoot me right away.

And that’s what happened to me in the first game. I was shot within the first few seconds. And not only was I shot, it hit me in the neck right below where the protective mask was. So it was right on my skin! It hurt so badly! Once you are hit, you are supposed to hold your gun up and walk off the course. And as I was, people kept shooting at me! Fortunately, the other times I was hit was where my skin was covered by clothing so that wasn’t as painful.

In the second game, I did a lot better. I was really good at hiding, so I never got hit. I also never hit anyone else, but I did take a bunch of shots!

Our group got moved to another course area for the next game, but it took so long for that game to get started that I had to leave (the other 3 girls ended up playing 2 more games).

When I got home, I checked out where I was hit for bruises. There’s a pretty nice looking bruise on my neck where I was hit (that I was expecting), but it’s not too bad on my arms or legs.

Overall, I consider my first paintball adventure to be a success. I don’t know if I want to go again, but maybe after my bruise fades I’ll feel differently.

Sailing Time (or An Easy Day After The Big Day)

The day after the wedding, my mom had arranged for a sailing trip for our whole group (almost everyone who went to the wedding was able to join us).

I actually never got pictures of the boat, but you can check it out on their website.

I was a bit nervous about going sailing. I haven’t been on a sailboat since 2005 and since I have a tendency to get carsick, I was afraid of getting seasick. But I wasn’t going to let that fear get in my way of having fun.

It was a perfect day to be out on the water!

DSCN0976

The boat was pretty spacious considering it was a sailboat. I spent most of my time sitting on the deck, but there were plenty of seats as well.

DSCN0987

We didn’t really have a destination on this adventure, we just sailed around for 3 hours. There was food served on board, but I didn’t want to risk the seasickness feeling. I’m sure I made the right choice because I never got seasick! I can’t say the same for my brother though.

DSCN1028

After Ross took a nap, he felt better.

I spent most of the sail just taking fun pictures of the group gathered on the boat.

DSCN1024 DSCN0996 DSCN1026

We even sailed by the rental house!

DSCN1022

You can’t quite see it in this picture, but we were able to find our neighbor’s house pretty easily due to some very colorful flowers they had in their yard.

Toward the end of the sail, the sun started to set.

DSCN1058

It was nice being able to watch the sunset on the water, however it was a bit of a dud sunset. The sky never really lit up like we’ve seen it do before.

Of course, I tried to get some pictures in front of the sunset, but it was getting a bit too dark by then.

DSCN1069

After 3 hours, we headed back to the marina. After the sail, I had to say goodbye to my cousin Adam, Ross’s friends, and Krystle’s family as we weren’t going to see them again on the trip. I’m actually not too sure when I’ll see any of them again, so it was a bit of a sad goodbye.

But I did still have one more day of vacation ahead of me. And tomorrow, I will have photos that prove that I got over my fear of the ocean (at least for that day)!

Driving Around East Maui (or Crossing Things Off My Maui Bucket List)

This day was all about East Maui. My Aunt Nancy decided to join me and my parents (my brother was spending the day with his friends), so the four of us headed out around 9:30am to start the big drive we had ahead.

One of the tourist magazines had an article on driving to Hana. We knew we weren’t going to go all the way to Hana and back (it’s like a 3 or 4 hour trip each way), but we decided to do a bunch of the stops that the article suggested. Also, I had a list of things that I wanted to do while in Maui (take a driving trip, see a waterfall, go snorkeling, drink from a coconut, have shaved ice), so this was going to help me do a bunch of those things.

Our driving adventure was on the Hana Highway and our first stop was to Twin Falls. This was a hike through the jungle and water to get to some waterfalls. The hike there was pretty much all uphill, and when you got close to the waterfalls, you had to go through some knee-deep water.

DSCN0568 DSCN0569

But the end result was totally worth it!

DSCN0564DSCN0567

It was so nice and relaxing back there (after I got over my fear of slipping and falling into the water and ruining my phone and camera). We didn’t wear bathing suits so we didn’t go swimming, but just wading out in the water to get to the waterfalls was quite refreshing after the hike uphill.

After walking back through the water and downhill to the parking lot, we decided to enjoy some fresh coconut water.

DSCN0572 DSCN0573

I’ve never drunk out of a coconut before, and I have to say that this was so much better than the coconut water you can buy in the grocery store! My mom, dad, and I shared one and it was the perfect after hike treat!

The next stop we made was at Garden of Eden, an arboretum and botanical garden. We drove up to the waterfall viewpoint area.

DSCN0585

And right next to that were some picnic tables with one of the most incredible views I’ve ever seen!

DSCN0575

We had packed some fruit, pita chips, and spinach dip in the car; so we had a snack with a view.

Next on the Hana Highway tour was Puaa Kaa to see another waterfall. You didn’t have to get into the water to see this one, but my dad decided to do it anyway.

DSCN0593

After that, we headed back towards where we started. We made a quick stop at Halfway to Hana for some shaved ice.

DSCN0597 DSCN0599

I have to say, I was expecting something very different from what we got. I’ve seen photos of Hawaiian shaved ice where it looks really fluffy and almost like ribbons of snow. This was more like a normal snow cone (but still yummy). I got half strawberry and half banana and shared with my parents (we still couldn’t finish the whole thing).

Our last stop of the day was something that casting director Marci Liroff suggested to me on twitter. We drove up to the top of Haleakala Crater to watch the sunset. There were a couple of viewpoints on the drive up the crater that we stopped at.

DSCN0604DSCN0606

But we made it up to the top (over 10,000 feet above sea level!).

DSCN0608

As you can see, we are all wearing sweaters up there. It was so cold! It felt like the winter in Lake Tahoe (minus the snow). We found an amazing spot to watch the sunset, and it was fabulous.

DSCN0614

And as we headed back to the car, the sky on the other side was so colorful.

DSCN0622

Finally, it was time to head back down the crater and back to West Maui where we were staying. Once we got home, we had been out for about 11 hours, so we were all pretty tired!

But I did get a lot of stuff done on my Maui list! Only snorkeling to go (and we are hoping to maybe do that on our last day here).

Exploring West Maui (or My Dad Found A Coconut With Jesus On It)

Day 2 in Maui was all about going around West Maui (the side of the island that we are staying on).

My brother and his almost wife arrived that morning, so my parents and I went for a walk around the neighborhood while waiting for them to arrive. Just walking down the driveway there were gorgeous views!

DSCN0502

We saw some really nice flowers.

DSCN0500 DSCN0508

And as the title of this post suggests, my dad found a coconut with Jesus on it (at least we think that’s what we see in it).

DSCN0501

When my brother and his fiancée got to the rental house, they stopped by to say hello, had a quick snack, and then they were off to spend the day at the beach and at a bar to watch the USC game.

And my parents and I went driving around West Maui to do some sightseeing. My parents have been to Maui before, but this is my first trip to this island (and my first trip back to Hawaii since I was 11).

Our first stop was at Honolua Bay. We just parked at the overlook and checked out the view from there.

DSCN0511

There were a bunch of snorkelers in the water and even from up high we could see lots of fish!

Next, we went to this blowhole that my parents saw on their last trip here. We got a little confused on where we were supposed to park and walk down, but we eventually found our way (with a little help from this sign).

DSCN0516

The blowhole was pretty cool, but it was not easy to photograph because the mist coming up wasn’t too strong.

DSCN0517

We also did a little hike around near the blowhole, but I slipped in some mud and hit my hip pretty hard. I didn’t take pictures there because I was in a lot of pain (3 days later, I’m feeling better but still very sore).

After that, we drove on the “forbidden highway”. It’s called that because it’s a one lane road (meaning one lane for both directions to share) and most rental car companies say that if you drive there, you void your rental agreement.

The road was pretty easy. We didn’t see a ton of cars going the other way, but if we did, one car would always back up to a turnout to let the other car pass.

DSCN0532

For that driving trip, we actually went around the entire circle of West Maui. It was a nice day and I loved getting to see a lot of the island.

We did a BBQ at the rental house that night and enjoyed another wonderful sunset.

DSCN0544

And just after sunset, the moon was super bright and right about the water.

DSCN0557

It was a nice full day of adventure for me!

Coming up tomorrow: East Maui, waterfalls, and giant craters!

M Street Kitchen (or A Happy Hour Adventure At Lunchtime)

I used to go on a bunch of happy hour adventures with my friend Kate. It just happened to work out that she and I both had Wednesday evenings free. But Kate’s schedule changed recently and we can’t do happy hour adventures any more.

But we were able to meet up for lunch this past Friday and catch up (it was the first time I had seen her since the horrible 5K). We decided to check out M Street Kitchen. I had actually never heard of it before, but Kate’s sister had gone there this month and loved it. Plus, it was close to my work so I didn’t have to go far for lunch.

I had checked out the menu online before, but I was still a bit undecided when we got there.

DSCN0107

But I did know pretty quickly what I wanted to drink. I’m still diet soda free (with the exception of the calorie-free sparkling flavored water I get every once in a while). I’ve been trying to find drink that I like that aren’t sodas, and one that I’ve re-discovered is iced chai lattes. I get a non-fat one from Starbucks maybe once a week or so. I need to start keeping milk in my house so that I can make them at home.

But I will say, the iced chai latte (even though it wasn’t non-fat) was pretty yummy at M Street Kitchen.

DSCN0108

For my lunch, I got the BBQ turkey sandwich. It was good, but it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. First of all, it was a bit spicier than I thought it would be. Also, somehow in my mind, I thought the turkey would be ground turkey (like a turkey burger). This was sliced. But it was still a filling sandwich.

DSCN0109

Over lunch, Kate and I discussed our plan for the 5K that we are doing this Friday. Since it’s a nighttime 5K (my first evening one), we wanted some glow-sticks. So I made a stop at Party City to pick some up, along with a few other items for me which you will see in my recap post next week.

Even though I miss my happy hour adventures, lunchtime adventures are pretty much just as good!

My Last Day By The Bay (or Time To Head Back To Reality)

On my last day in San Francisco, my parents came up to have brunch with us (they were on their way to Lake Tahoe so they made a quick stop).

Before brunch, we went up to the roof of my brother’s place to check out the view.

IMG_1720

We went to brunch (where I forgot to take any pictures, sorry), and then my parents had to head out to continue their trip.

My brother, Krystle, Anna, and I weren’t too sure what we were going to do for the day since I had to be at the airport that afternoon to catch my flight home.

We started off by heading across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito.

IMG_1723

We walked around for a bit, checked out some shops, and checked out the view of the city.

IMG_1732

Then after my brother and Krystle did some wine tasting and got some wine, we headed back to the city to drive down the most crooked street in the world.

IMG_1738

Then we headed over to Pier 39 to check out the sea lions.

IMG_1747

Sorry for the far away picture. It was very smelly close to the sea lions and we wanted to keep our distance!

After checking out Pier 39 a bit more, stopping at a bar for a quick drink, and heading back to the car; it was time for me to get to the airport to catch my flight.

My brother drove me to the airport, so I didn’t have the same adventure going back as I did coming in. My flight ended up being delayed so I had some dinner in the airport (nothing good enough to talk about) and got a lot of reading done.

I boarded my flight about an hour after it was supposed to take off, and then we got delayed again on the runway. I’m not sure how long we were stuck because I ended up falling asleep. I woke up during the drink service and watched us fly into LA (I love seeing all the city lights when I’m flying in).

After a long weekend, it was really nice to be home. I enjoyed my trip, but I knew that the next morning I had to go back to work and I wanted to be prepared.

Thanks again to my brother Ross and Krystle for inviting me out for last weekend and letting me stay with them! Unless they come out to LA for my birthday in August, I think the next time I’ll see them will be at their wedding in Hawaii!

Going to The Happiest Place on Earth (or How Recycling Ink Got Me an Annual Pass)

Yesterday was the last day that my mom and aunt were in LA. And we had our grand finale adventure then as well.

We went to Disneyland!!!

I’ve previously expressed my love for Disneyland (and how I couldn’t quite afford it), but I found a way to get my pass. At Thanksgiving, my mom gave me about 70 or 80 ink cartridges that she wanted to recycle. And since I could use the $2 for each ink, she decided to let me recycle them and enjoy the extra money. You can only recycle 10 at a time, but I had gotten about $50 in coupons since I also purchased some items at the store. And you are able to use your coupons for gift cards online (but not in the store). So I got a $50 gift card, and I ended up using that yesterday to put towards my pass (it was $269 so I only really paid $219).

Disneyland was amazing. I hadn’t been in about 2 years, so there was a lot of new stuff for me to see!

We totally lucked out by going on a gorgeous day.

IMG_1375 IMG_1344 IMG_1347

(that last picture is from the StoryBook Canal Boats)

One of the highlights of the day was going to Cars Land. We rode both the tires and the racing ride. We ended up doing the racing ride twice, once in the daytime and once at night.

I highly recommend going at night. It is gorgeous there!

IMG_1372 IMG_1369

For our main meal yesterday, we had another linner but this time it was at the Blue Bayou. We had a waterfront table, so we got to see all the boats for Pirates of the Caribbean going right by our table. I had never eaten there before (maybe once when I was 3 but my mom can’t remember).

I decided to splurge on my calories a bit and had the short ribs.

IMG_1342

It was so delicious that I forgot to take a photo of my food!

We rode almost everything that we wanted to go on (except Space Mountain which was broken) and spent almost equal time between Disneyland and California Adventure.

We ended our day with seeing the World of Color show at California Adventure. None of us had ever seen the show, so we weren’t sure what to expect. But we were all pleasantly surprised by how amazing the show was!

IMG_1394

We ended up spending about 10 hours in the parks. Not my all time record, but after the past few days I’m exhausted!

Today I go back to “real” life and work. I hope I’ll be able to focus.

Mom and Aunt Cindy, thank you so much for coming to visit me and indulging me on these adventures! Thank you for paying for meals and driving around so I didn’t have to! I think we should make this girl’s week a new tradition!

IMG_1356

Family Time (or A Culver City Type of Day)

My mom and Aunt Cindy got here yesterday in the afternoon, so I spent the morning doing errands and cleaning up and the afternoon with them.

My mom and dad normally come to visit me together (my dad’s first solo visit was for the Pat Metheny show), but my mom has been here a few times alone. My aunt has never visited me while I’ve lived at my current house, but now that I think about it, I don’t know if she’s ever visited me in LA before.

The first stop when after they both had gotten in (my mom was driving from the Bay Area and my aunt was coming in from Sacramento), was my house. It was nice and clean (I hope), and my aunt finally got to see my cute little house. I gave her the grand tour, which took all of 2 minutes, and then we were off for an adventure.

My aunt grew up in Culver City (my mom and her siblings grew up in the LA area too, but in the valley), and had not been back in years. I was always telling her about different areas, but she couldn’t quite picture it. So we did a little driving tour of Culver City.

We went to check out my aunt’s old house. My aunt wasn’t sure she wanted to go inside, but my mom has an awesome track record of getting to see the inside of houses she grew up in, so she tried. And we did get to go inside and see my aunt’s old house.

I had never seen it before, but according to my aunt, a lot of the place was exactly the same as how it was when she lived there with her parents. Even the tiles in the kitchen were the exact same! She’s going to find some old photos so I could see what it looked like when she lived there.

After that, we drove around to see her old school, which is one of the schools that I used to substitute teach at!

Finally we had a nice early dinner at Ugo.

We ended the night early since both my mom and aunt had long drives earlier today. We have more adventures planned for today, and I’ll be writing about those tomorrow!

Maintenance Time (or Busy Busy Weekend)

I sure kept myself busy this past weekend.

On Saturday, I was at work for 4 hours. Since it was the end of the pay period for us, I had a lot of little jobs to do to finish out everything and make sure my time cards and commissions were in order. Also, I’m not going to be in work the day that everything is checked (before it’s sent to the accountant to make out our checks), so I had to make sure everything is perfect. More on why I won’t be in work in a minute.

After work, I headed over to my friend’s house. The original plan was for me to have my hair cut and colored and then I was going to babysit my friend’s kids so she and her husband could go out. But my friend and her husband decided to spend the evening in, so it was just a fun hangout and hair session with my friend.

There are certain beauty routines that are luxuries like manicures, expensive makeup, blowouts, and pedicures in the winter. But things like cutting and coloring my hair and having my eyebrows done are maintenance work for me. I have to look good (even if I look this weird while my hair is being dyed).

IMG_1330

After my hair was done, I spent some time just hanging out with my friend, her husband, and their kids. It was a low-key Saturday night, but it was exactly what was needed.

With Sundays being my only day off in a typical week, that day is always filled with doing my house chores. I spend a decent chunk of the day doing sweeping, vacuuming, laundry, and any other random tasks that need to be done around the house.

And I made sure to get all of my chores done yesterday because today I have family coming to town to visit me!

My mom and Aunt Cindy are coming in town for a couple of days! I’m super excited and we have some really great things planned. My Aunt Cindy and I have had this casually planned out for 6 years or so, but things like my hip surgery or other family events kept popping up and postponing our plans. My mom was saying how we were just letting her tag along, but she was always included in our plans.

I’m excited to share with you over the next few days the adventures that the 3 of us have ahead!

Keeping Life Exciting (or Making Sure Tomorrow is Different Than Yesterday)

Along with my focus on trying to get healthier, I’m also trying to mix up things in my life. It’s a bit tough to have a super active social life when you work 6 days a week (and 3 of those days include evenings), but I try.

I try to go out on adventures on Wednesdays when I get out of work early. I’m investing in Groupons and Living Social deals to try new things (although that doesn’t always work out how I would like). I’ve got plans for some trips coming up (Texas for my friend’s wedding, home for Thanksgiving, and San Francisco for my future sister-in-law’s dress fitting). I’m even starting to get back into acting class (currently signed up for the SAG-AFTRA Conservatory and Marci Liroff’s Audition Bootcamp).

Since I’ve done this, I’ve been a lot happier in my life. I’m still a bit exhausted sometimes from my schedule, but overall, I’m happy. And yes, most of these things cost money, but it’s worth it. And I feel like I’ve been able to cut back financially in other areas.

And I have noticed a bit of a steady weight loss since doing this. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m eating differently or if letting go of some of my stress is helping, but I’m glad the numbers on the scale are going down. I still need to make a bit more of an effort to get the numbers to go down at a rate that I would like, but I always figure a tiny weight loss is better than a gain or being the same.

Soon, I might have a lot more time to be social. My current day job is seasonal, but right now, the end of the season is up in the air. In past years, the end of the season would be coming up in 3 weeks, but that isn’t probably happening. We might start having our hours cut back, and that would give me more than one day free a week. I’m kind of excited to see what other fun things I can bring back to my life when I have a bit more time! But for now, I look at my calendar and smile at all the fabulous things I have scheduled.
