A Smile In Spin Class (or Sometimes The Little Things Are Big)

Since I’m not working right now, I’m trying spin classes at times other than those that I usually go to. When I’m working, I’m pretty limited in when I can go. And I see the same instructors each time (who I love so that’s ok). So I wanted to check out some new instructors to see who else I like. Hopefully one day I’ll have a day job that allows me to go to other classes and I like knowing which instructors I want to go to.

When I’m working, on Tuesdays and Thursdays I go to the 8:30am class with Laura. This class is early enough so I can go home to shower and change before work. While there are showers at spin class, I prefer going home so I don’t have sweaty clothes in my car all day (and then I don’t have to lug a bunch of stuff with me). But this week on Tuesday, I tried the 10:30 class with Charlee. I’ve never had a class with her before, so I was a little nervous (I still can’t do all the standing up stuff and I don’t like to be called out for it).

I got my usual bike in the corner that I like so I was out-of-the-way but still had a good view of the instructor bike. And it wasn’t a fully packed class which was nice too. When Charlee came in, she started greeting people, and I assumed that those were people who had taken her class before.

We started class with a run on the bike (pedaling as fast as you can go while standing up). I did it sitting, but going really fast. And then Charlee shouted out “Way to go, Jen!” while looking right at me.

I hadn’t introduced myself to her before class so I was a bit confused. Then I realized that she knew everyone’s name in the room. Even people who were at their very first class ever. Charlee must had looked at the sign up list and had learned the names of everyone in class!

That’s so amazing! It made this class feel much more like one of my regular ones instead of a new instructor. And I have to say that I loved Charlee’s class (I’m hoping to make it to her class again today). Sadly, once I’m back at work next week I don’t know when I can be in her class unless I have a random day off (or shower there and race to work). But it’s nice to have another instructor who’s class I really enjoy.

Skinny Spinach Dip (or A Recipe From Food Should Taste Good)

After I got the chips from Food Should Taste Good, I knew I wanted to make a dip to go with them. I ended up going to their recipe website and found skinny spinach dip. I love spinach dip, but it’s normally a pretty high calorie choice. I added up the ingredients from this recipe and the entire batch is about 500 calories! So of course I’m sharing it with all of you!

Here’s what you’ll need:

4 cups chopped fresh spinach, loosely packed

12 oz plain greek yogurt (I like Fage)

1/4 cup green onions, chopped

3 cloves of garlic, minced

1 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 cup grate Parmesan cheese

DSCN1138

And the steps to make this are super easy!

Put the first seven ingredients (everything but the Parmesan) in a bowl.

DSCN1145

Mix it together.

DSCN1146

Put the mix in an oven proof bowl (I sprayed some non-stick spray in it).

DSCN1147

I actually made this a day ahead so for me, the next step was to stick it in my fridge. I was going to bake it the next day. If you are making this the same day, obviously skip this step.

DSCN1148

(Now you all know what I keep in my fridge!)

When you are ready to bake it, put it in a 350 degree oven.

DSCN1150

And let it bake for about 30 minutes (since mine came out of the fridge, I let it bake for about 40 minutes). The cheese should be melted and bubbly and the edges should be golden.

DSCN1151

Finally, sprinkle the Parmesan cheese on top!

DSCN1152

That’s it! It’s super easy and it was really yummy too! Between me and my friend, we pretty much finished it all! I know that I’ll be making this again for parties in the future. It was quick to put together and it looked impressive. The only thing that I would change was I would make sure to chop the spinach smaller. Or maybe take some frozen spinach and thaw and drain it to use. But even with the big spinach pieces, it was so good!

I hope you all try this out sometime soon!

PS: On a totally unrelated note, I want to wish my brother Ross a happy birthday!

Too Much Stuff (or Some Things Are Easier To Get Rid Of Than Others)

I’ve mentioned in the past my issues with giving away old clothes. I still have 2 giant bags of clothes in smaller sizes under my bed. I did give away 2 pieces recently to a friend, but I have almost all of it still there. It is so much easier giving away clothing to a friend than to Goodwill.

While I haven’t been able to give away clothes successfully, I was able to get rid of some things that I don’t use in my house recently. First of all, I have a crazy DVD collection. I love my movies and TV shows and love having the DVDs there so I can watch them (and also enjoy the bonus features) anytime I want to. But there are some DVDs that I’ve either outgrown, don’t watch, or never watched (I somehow “inherited” DVDs from old roommates). You can see how many I’ve accumulated in this photo I took a few months ago.

IMG_2025

My collection had actually gotten a bit bigger since I took that photo and I realized that I was running out of storage room (and I don’t think I can fit a bigger DVD tower in my little house!).

So I looked into a couple of buyback options. First I searched on Amazon and BestBuy. Neither of them were offering me that much on my DVDs. I ended up going to Amoeba. Of the 37 DVDs I was trying to sell to them, they took 33. I chose store credit over cash because you get a lot more in credit and I used that to buy the latest season of “How I Met Your Mother” on DVD (something I really like).

I brought my other DVDs back home with me and realized that I had more than DVDs that I could get rid of. I had a Wii and a Wii Fit that I haven’t used in a while (I stopped using it around the time I discovered SoulCycle). I looked back on Amazon for their buyback program and realized that I could get quite a bit for my gaming system. So I decided to sell them that plus the DVDs that Amoeba didn’t want. Between all of it, I’m going to be getting about $70 in Amazon credit. I know that I probably could have sold them for more if I went on eBay or craigslist, but I didn’t want the hassle. Amazon sent me a shipping label and I shipped everything off yesterday.

It’s nice to have a cleaner house with fewer things in it. While I will never be a minimalist, I do like to limit clutter and excess. I’m starting to go through my clothing again to see what I can give up, and while I know it won’t be all of it, I would like to try to donate at least a few pieces soon.

“Let’s Make A Deal” Round Two (or Maybe Game Shows Don’t Love Me Anymore)

Friday was attempt #2 to get on “Let’s Make A Deal”. This time, my friend Jose was able to come with me, so I had a much better time!

We had tickets to the earlier taping (they do 2 episodes a day), so we had to be at the studios by 9am. It was freezing out (or at least freezing for LA), so I was grateful to be inside quickly!

This time, I dressed as a pig in a blanket (wearing a pig nose and ears and wrapping myself in a blanket) and Jose was a cowboy. We took a quick photo together before we had to turn in our phones to the production assistants.

IMG_2119

I wasn’t wearing the pig nose in the picture because the pig accessories that I bought were for kids and the nose was small and hurt. Once the taping was over and I took the nose off, my nose was super red and looked scratched up.

Anyway, I thought since I had been at the taping before and didn’t get called up that maybe this time I would. No love for me! Neither Jose nor I was called to make a deal with Wayne Brady. There was a lady who sat in front of us that won a deal that included diamond jewelry, a trip, and cash! She was extremely lucky!

Even though we didn’t get called up, Jose and I had a lot of fun. I hadn’t seen him since my 30th birthday party so we had some catching up to do. And they play really great music during the breaks in the taping so we were dancing and singing along.

I was a little disappointed not to get called up. I thought I was sure to since I was a return audience member. “Let’s Make A Deal” is the first game show I’ve gone to where I could be a potential contestant. Every other show I was either going as just an audience member with no chance of playing the game (like at “Wheel of Fortune” or “Family Feud”) or I had auditioned for the game show and was selected ahead of time to be a contestant.

Being at this type of game show is kind of like acting and auditioning. You have the chance to get a shot, but there’s no guarantee. I can still go back to “Let’s Make A Deal” another time to try again, but I’m not sure if or when I’d do that. I’m starting back at work in a week, and this last week I’m a little crazy trying to get more things done (plus I have to work another show shift at work on Friday).

Maybe one day in the future I’ll write another post about “Let’s Make A Deal” and it will be a happier story. But for now, I’m glad that I had the free time to go on a fun show and have a great morning with an awesome friend!

End Of Another Week (or Almost Back To Work)

I have one week left of unemployment, although technically tonight I’m working a show shift. I’m really trying to maximize the free time I have left because I don’t know when it will be like this again (hopefully in March like this year).

Yesterday I got a bunch of other errands done that I had been putting off and I had a friend over for happy hour (there will be a recipe coming next week). And today I’m going back to “Let’s Make A Deal” and hopefully I’ll get called up to play this time! I’m going straight to work after the game show, but since it’s a show shift that’s not too bad (I’ll just have to change in my car).

This weekend I’m planning on going to another SAG-AFTRA Film Society screening. And next week I’ve got a few other screenings to go to as well as another Women in Film mentoring meeting. I’m also going to the Patti LuPone at my work on the 19th that I’ve been looking forward to since it was announced!

I’m hoping to get a hike in next week as well. My hip is still bugging me but I’ve only got 2 weeks before I have my next 5K (and that starts my 3 5Ks in 13 days). I know that I want to get stronger and faster before the race. I’d love to continue to bring down my 5K time! I have a goal time in mind, but I don’t have a time frame to get that done. I know that my speed isn’t always in my control so I don’t want to “fail”.

I’m so happy that my last week of unemployment has so much fun stuff in it. I’m sure after a week or two of work I’ll be complaining again about not having any free time. I do know that November shouldn’t be too horrible because I have so much stuff on the weekends already schedule that I will only be working one weekend in the entire month (I’ve already given my boss the heads up)!

I’m hoping to make the most of this last week of freedom. I saw some things on Pinterest about freezer crockpot meals and I’m thinking of taking a day next week to make those recipes. I just have to find a set that has recipes that sounds like things I would enjoy.

Next week, I promise to have my recipe from happy hour as well as my recap of my second attempt of being on “Let’s Make A Deal”!

More Goodness (or I Got Chipped!)

Yesterday started off of a down note. It was getting ready to rain here in LA, and my hips were killing me! No painkiller seemed to be working. So I spent the morning in bed doing stretches (and catching up on my reading).

I finally started to feel better around noon and as I was walking into my living room, my doorbell rang. I opened the door to find the FedEx guy with a box for me.

DSCN1132

I seriously love that it was addressed to “Finding My Inner Bombshell”! I opened up the box to find this inside.

DSCN1136

A gift from Food Should Taste Good! They are promoting their Food Should Do Good program. This month they will be donating $100,000 to Play for P.I.N.K. to support breast cancer research.

Obviously, breast cancer research now means a lot more to me now than it used to. But I’ve also seen reports about companies exploiting the idea of pink things. You have to be careful about buying pink items to support breast cancer. But I’m proud to say that I did some research on Play for P.I.N.K. and they seem awesome! They use various sport events to raise money for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This seems pretty fitting to support my mom since she is still kicking butt on the tennis field even while going through chemo!

I haven’t opened the bags of chips yet. I have a friend coming over tonight for a happy hour hangout and I’m trying a new dip recipe to have with them.

It’s nice to have something bring a smile on my face when I was in such a foul mood when I woke up. I tried to continue the good mood by getting a lot of work stuff done. I also made it out to run some errands that I had been putting off (I’m so grateful for underground parking so I didn’t have to go out in the rain).

It’s not raining anymore here but I’m still in more pain that usual. Hopefully it will go away quickly because I’ve got a bunch of 5Ks coming up soon that I want to get some training done for!

Exciting News (or Sometimes It Pays To Wait It Out)

I’ve got some exciting news to share with all of you! I’ve wanted to share it for about a week, but I had to wait for it to be official.

I’m the new festival co-director for the Beverly Hills Shorts Festival!

You all might be wondering what I’m talking about since I haven’t mentioned this festival before. Here’s a little back story.

About 7 years ago, I heard through The Actors’ Network that there was a film festival that needed volunteers. I was unemployed then so I figured I should check it out and maybe I’d meet some cool people. I enjoyed volunteering so much that I returned for every screening for the festival! I got to know the directors Dan and Laura pretty well because of that.

The next year, they asked me if I’d like to volunteer again. And of course I said yes! After the second year, they asked me if I’d like to become a staff member of the festival and be the volunteer coordinator. And again I said yes. So for the past few years, I’ve worked as the volunteer coordinator.

The only reason I haven’t mentioned this festival on the blog yet is because last year, the festival was held before I started blogging (I almost don’t remember a time I didn’t blog!). This year, the festival was moved to November.

But I’ve been a part of this festival for 6 years (this year will be my 7th) and I’m so excited that my role with them is expanding into something amazing.

I never would have guessed all those years ago that volunteering on a whim would result in something so cool. And I didn’t go into this hoping that one day I’d be a co-director. It just naturally happened.

I’m so grateful that Dan and Laura think that I should be the co-director of the festival. It means so much that they can trust me. I’m excited for the festival this year and just a little nervous to be running the show for the first year. But I know that this is only going to lead to more and more good things in my life.

And just in case any filmmakers are reading this, I still don’t get a say in the programming of the festival. Submissions for this year are closed now, but if you want to submit for next year, you are all welcome to. Just know that sucking up to me isn’t going to help you any! But if any of you want to help out with the film festival this year, leave me a comment and I’ll make sure to get back to you when I’m putting together the volunteer list!

Unemployment Honeymoon (or I Need To Be Doing Things!)

I’ve hit what I feel like is the end of an unemployment honeymoon. It may have something to do with all the issues with unemployment I’ve had this time. I did finally get my letter in the mail that they are processing my claim, and I don’t believe that for any reason it should be rejected.

For a while, it was nice to sleep in late (until 8am sometimes!) and not have to worry about rushing around. But now I’m at a point where I’m working on trying to find things to do. It’s not like I can just go out and work. I am still registered as a substitute teacher but the district I work for hasn’t needed me. And I can’t force auditions to come my way.

So I’ve been working on finding something to do everyday. Sometimes it’s easy like going to Disneyland, but some days it’s tough. Yesterday, I had nothing that had to be done. No errands, no friends to meet up with, nothing.\

I know that I spent way too much time online yesterday. Time flew by while I was reading various news sites and before I knew it, it was the afternoon. So I went for a walk just so I would get out of my house. I’m sure I could have just spent my day without ever stepping outside, but I don’t want to get into that habit. When I’m working, sometimes it’s ok to have a day like that. But when I don’t have something that is forcing me out of the house everyday, I feel like staying inside all day could become a very bad habit.

I know I probably sound really ungrateful right now. There are plenty of people out of work who can’t receive unemployment benefits. At least with that, I should be able to pay all of my bills on time even without getting a paycheck this month. Not everyone can say that.

I went through this same thing last time I was unemployed. The grass is greener on the other side, no matter what side you were on. If only I could find a day job where it feels more like I’m unemployed while still getting a regular paycheck. That would be the ultimate dream!

But for now, I’m trying to be happy that I get to have free time like this and relax for a bit. And maybe I should stagger my errands so I don’t do everything in one day and then don’t have anything I have to do the next day.

More Disneyland (or The Post With The Ride Photos)

Yesterday I went to Disneyland (yes, again). I met up with Jennifer, who I went to high school with. We actually hadn’t seen each other since our high school graduation (12 years ago!), so it was pretty awesome to get to see her again.

Besides Jennifer, her friends Hope and Jen were also there. Yes, in our group of 4 there were 3 Jens.

I met the group in California Adventure and we started our day on the Tower of Terror. I love this ride, but I don’t have many friends who do. So I usually either go on this alone or skip it so my friends don’t have to wait. But the 4 of us all went on and of course we took a silly picture on the ride.

1374986_626982630657556_2014836920_n

If you can’t find us, we are in the last row pretending to be asleep.

Our next stop was at Toy Story Mania. This is a 3D shooting game, and I’m pretty decent at it. Jennifer beat me, but I had better accuracy so I say that we were both winners.

IMG_2107

Next was California Screamin, the big upside down roller coaster in the Paradise Pier section of the park. We got to sit in the very last rows which is my favorite (you go a lot faster there than you do when you sit in the front). Since I’m at Disneyland a lot, I know where most of the cameras are on the rides. So even though it’s not all of us doing a silly pose, it’s still a cute photo.

1383321_10101887615979274_2000301375_n

Then Jennifer and Hope wanted to go on Grizzly River Run which is a water ride. I hate having wet clothes while I’m walking around the park, so Jen and I sat off to the side and had some strawberry lemonades while we waited for the others to ride the ride. They came back pretty soaked so I think I made the right choice for me.

We then headed over to Soarin Over California, which is one of my favorites (one of the songs from the ride is actually the ringtone on my phone). Finally, we did Tower of Terror one more time, but when we went to see our photo, there wasn’t one there.

Then it was time to head across the plaza to Disneyland. We had some lunch and then went on Space Mountain (I love the Halloween overlay!). Again, we had to take a fun picture.

1379342_10101887498993714_827691426_n

As we were leaving Space Mountain and heading toward the exit (Jennifer, Jen, and Hope had to drive back up to Northern CA so they could all go to work/school today), I saw someone who I had to take a picture of. I’m not making fun of her size or shape, but I have to say that when I first saw this person, I thought she was walking around Disneyland without pants.

IMG_2110

No matter how much or little you weigh, you should never wear pants (especially yoga pants) that are almost the exact same color as your skin. I think if she was wearing bright colored yoga pants or even black ones (which is what I happened to be wearing yesterday), it would be a cute outfit. But with the nude colored pants, everyone was looking at her to see if she was naked in the park.

Our last stop before heading back to the parking lot was one of the stores on Main Street. The others had some things that they wanted to buy and I wanted to see if there was anything I wanted (you never know). I had seen this scarf when I was in the park last week and it was on sale yesterday so I got it. The pattern is very subtle so it won’t scream Disney if I wear it out and about.

And then I saw something that I had been searching for since I was at Disneyland with my mom and aunt in the beginning of the year!

IMG_2111

It is a plush Minnie Mouse hooded scarf! I saw someone walking in the park when I was with my mom and aunt wearing this and I’ve been looking for it in the stores ever since. I even looked last week and didn’t see it there! But yesterday, there it was. And of course I had to get it since I’ve been wanting this for over half a year and didn’t know if I would find it again. I’m now looking forward to wearing this to the park when I go around Christmas time!

Finally, it was time for all of us to head home (30 minutes away for me, 7 hours for the others). It was really great getting to see Jennifer again. I haven’t really seen too many people from high school since graduating and while I stay in touch with a lot of people on Facebook, it’s so different hanging out in person.

I’m hoping that the next time that Jennifer, Jen, and Hope are at Disneyland that I can meet up with them there! I had such an amazing time!

Unemployment Issues (or I Shouldn’t Stay Quiet)

My last day of work was on September 20th. I was done at 1pm and as soon as I got home, I got on my computer and filed for unemployment. It took about 15 minutes and I got a confirmation online that I had filed. I was supposed to get a paper confirmation of my unemployment status within 10 days.

I never got anything. At first, I thought it was because we had a new mail person for a few days and they never brought anyone the correct mail. But I started to worry.

You can only talk to someone at the unemployment office on the phone between 8am and noon. You can also submit questions online. So I did the form online but I also called.

Everyone must have been calling because for 3 days, I could not get through on the phone! I still hadn’t gotten any other response from the unemployment office so yesterday I knew I needed to keep calling.

Somehow, I got through to somebody around 9am (I made about 100 calls prior to that yesterday with no luck). They looked up my confirmation number and said that I never filed for unemployment.

That’s just ridiculous! I know I filed and that I filled out all the paperwork. I re-filed on the phone yesterday and they let me know that they backdated my filing but I still would not get any paperwork for about 10 days.

So by the time I get my paperwork, I might be back at work. I will still get checks for the weeks that will have passed, but I might not have the money by the time that my rent is due. And I don’t have enough saved right now to pay rent without my unemployment money.

I guess I was thinking too lightly about unemployment. It was so easy last time and there was almost no delay in anything. I thought it would be like this again.

I also should not have just figured it was a mail issue behind me not getting my paperwork. I wish I had spoken up sooner so the delay wouldn’t have been as long.

But as people say, hindsight is 20/20. But I know for the future to take more responsibility for all of this and to speak up sooner if I think that something is wrong.
