Almost The End Of A Decade For Me (or The Birthday Countdown Has Begun)

My 30th birthday is in less than 2 weeks! I’m so excited to be turning 30 (and I say that with no sarcasm at all)!

You may recall how much I enjoyed my birthday last year. I had a bunch of little celebrations, which is how I’ve spent many of my past birthdays. It’s just easier to organize a couple of friends at a time and spread out the birthday fun.

This year will be a little different. I will still be doing some of my smaller birthday celebrations (like my free meals at Truxton’s, Benihana, and Marie Callendar’s), but I’m planning a big 30th birthday celebration too!

I figure you only turn 30 once (technically, I guess that is true with any age), so I might as well make this a party to remember!

I thought about a couple of places where I would like to have a party, but I kept thinking about how fun it would be at Bodega Wine Bar. I really love it there, and the food and drinks aren’t too horribly expensive.

When I looked at their reservation information, there was something that made me realize I might need a backup plan. If you have a reservation on a Friday or Saturday (my birthday happens to fall on a Friday this year), you must have a minimum bar charge on one tab. That’s pretty tough to do when most of my friends will be dropping in for part of the evening and will want to be able to pay for their own drinks on their own credit cards.

So I came up with a few backup locations before I called Bodega to see about having the minimum charge rule dropped (it can’t hurt to ask, right?).

I spoke with the manager, Charity, and I have to say that she was so incredibly nice! I was prepared to have to convince her to drop the minimum. But after I explained that it was my 30th birthday and how much I love the bar, it was all taken care of!

So now I get to look forward to an amazing birthday party in 11 more days! I think I have an outfit picked out (something I rented from Gwynnie Bee) and I’m most likely having the day after my birthday off at my day job (since we have to work a long shift on Sundays when we normally have a day off).

All in all, I think this plan is coming together very nicely and will be the perfect way to say goodbye to my 20’s and hello to my 30’s!

Wine and Mustaches (or Drinking Reckless Love)

Last week, I was invited to attend a wine launch party for Rebel Coast Winery. I had tried their sparkling wine at the LA Wine Fest I went to earlier this year, but this party was for a wine that they didn’t have at the other event.

The party was held at Bodega Wine Bar, which is one of my favorite happy hour spots. I invited a bunch of my friends to come with me, but Kate was the only one who had that evening free. After checking in, we took a picture in front of the step-and-repeat.

The wine that the party was for is called Reckless Love.

DSCN0250

It is a blend wine with a mix of Cabernet and Syrah. I typically don’t drink red wine (I like to stick to sparkling wines most of the time), but I have to say that I really enjoyed this one! It was nice and refreshing and not nearly as heavy as I expected it to be. And the bottle was pretty cute too (the label is even glow-in-the-dark!).

Since the wine bottle has a mustache on it, a lot of the party had mustaches. One of the sponsors was Lyft (whose drivers mark their cars with giant pink fuzzy mustaches). There were also mustache temporary tattoos (I grabbed a bunch and brought them to work the next day for my co-workers) and mustache trims available at the party.

And the wine glasses for the event were Mason jars with mustaches on them!

(I really tried to line up the mustache on the glass to my face)

After drinking our drinks and checking out the event a bit, Bodega started to get really crowded. Kate and I wanted to let other people have a chance to take our seats so they could enjoy their drinks, so we headed out.

I had such a fun time that night! It was actually right after the failed beach attempt, so it was nice to have something fun in the day that didn’t get rained out. Thank you to Rebel Coast Winery and LA Wonders for inviting me to check out Reckless Love. I’ll totally be on the lookout for the wine the next time I go wine shopping!

Remembering To Have Fun (or Celebrating With Smores)

I love when my friends have things happening in their life that I can celebrate! I love going to weddings, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, or celebrating a birthday.

My friend David just graduated from college. Now, I know that a lot of people have graduated from college recently, but David’s story is different. He took his time, taking a classes when he could. I believe he said that he ended up taking classes at 5 different universities (sorry David if I’m wrong about this). So for him to graduate, he had a ton of patience and willpower!

Of course when he asked me to come to his graduation party I said yes! The party was held at Barney’s Beanery in Burbank (try saying that 3 times fast!). I have been to Barney’s a bunch in the past, but normally I’m just eating something quickly there before going off to another event.

This time, I actually got to relax and have some fun. I didn’t know anybody else besides David at the dinner, but by the end of the evening, I had a ton of new friends! And it was just a fun, low-key dinner out. I haven’t had an evening like that in a while.

Normally when I schedule something fun to do, it’s a scheduled event. And those are totally fun. But I had almost forgotten how nice it was to have a slow-paced evening with good people when there isn’t a schedule you have to worry about.

I didn’t take a ton of pictures of my food. I had an avocado melt sandwich for dinner which was delicious.

But where all of us at the table went crazy was dessert. Barney’s Beanery has smores on the menu! So with 8 of us at the table, we let our waiter decide how many orders of smores to bring out to us.

He brought out 3 orders. And they had run out of chocolate bars, so he drizzled chocolate sauce over the graham crackers.

IMG_1895

The blue thing on the plate was some sort of flammable gel, but I couldn’t seem to get the flame on my pictures. I did get the flame to show up when it was on the marshmallows.

IMG_1894

As much as I love smores, having chocolate sauce on the graham crackers just doesn’t work. It made them so drippy and messy. So after we all attempted to eat one with the graham crackers, it seemed like we all just roasted the marshmallows and ate them off the sticks.

Before we knew it, it was pretty late and time to head home. I congratulated David again on his college graduation, and was on the road for the drive home. I’m so glad that I was able to celebrate another friend’s accomplishments. It really is one of the best ways to spend an evening.

Ms. in The Biz (or I’m Cheating On This Blog With Another Blog)

Since I started writing this blog, I’ve discovered a love for writing that I did not know that I had before. I almost always look forward to writing my posts on here (although I do get the occasional writer’s block). And I’ve decided to expand my blogging reach.

A few weeks ago, I saw that a friend of mine, Helenna, was starting a new online magazine written by women in the entertainment industry.

Of course I wanted to be a part of it!

So I’m excited to announce that I am going to be a contributing blogger for Ms. In The Biz! I will be writing about my adventures in LA as an actress and my day-to-day life trying to live my dream.

The blog will be launching soon (you can sign up on the website to get an email when it’s up), but this past weekend we had the LA contributor get together and Cinco in Westchester.

It was a really great little party. We all got one drink for free.

IMG_1504

I’ll give you one hint about what I got to drink.

IMG_1500

I had such a nice time connecting with old friends and meeting a bunch of new ones. I was so busy chatting that I only got a few pictures with friends.

The lovely Lizza, who is also in the same WIF mentoring circle as me (and loves the same books that I do!).

IMG_1503

The awesome Carolina, who I chat with a bunch online, but we realized that night that it had been exactly one year to the day since the last time we saw each other in person (time totally flies by).

IMG_1501

And the founder of Ms. In The Biz, Helenna!

IMG_1505

I hope that at least some of you readers will sign up to check out the new blog. I’ll still be blogging on here every day like usual, but I’ll probably go into a bit more detail about what my life is like as an actress on Ms. In The Biz.

Hollywood Superbowl (or Where I Was For The Oscars)

Oscar Sunday is pretty much a holiday here in LA. And as a holiday, you want to spend it with those you love at some sort of gathering.

Probably for the past 10 years, I’ve always spent it at a party at my friend Marie‘s house. And her parties are always awesome!

First of all, it’s a costume party. You are supposed to come dressed as a character from a movie in the past year.

I’ve had some great costumes in the past.

100_0333

I’ve been Edna from “The Incredibles”. No capes!!

100_0593.JPG

I’ve been a drunk bridesmaid from “Wedding Crashers”.

I’ve also had some not-so-great costumes. One year, I just wore jeans and a top, and on one pockets I had a bunch of pictures of international destinations and on the other pocket I had a bunch of different sorority letters (I was the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”).

This year, I didn’t have a fabulous costume, but it wasn’t horrible either.

IMG_1435

I was a citizen of The Capitol from “The Hunger Games”. And yes, that is my wig from The Color Run.

Marie (and her husband Chris) really do a great job throwing this party. They have a red carpet.

IMG_1433

And two different screening areas. One is in the living room around the tv and in that room, it is considered the chatty room. The other is in the garage where they project the show on a wall. In the garage, that’s where the serious watchers watch (and that includes me).

IMG_1444

Overall, I think the show was pretty good. I didn’t love Seth MacFarlane as a host, but I was expecting it to be much worse. The opening was way too long (if that was cut down it might have ended almost on time).

I didn’t do too great with guessing the winners. I got 16 right, but I guessed a few of the major categories incorrectly (I picked Tommy Lee Jones for supporting actor and Steven Spielberg as director). I thought all the speeches were pretty amazing, especially Ben Affleck. I loved the end of his speech.

He said, “It doesn’t matter how you get knocked down in life; that’s going to happen. All that matters is you’ve got to get up”. That advice is great for an acting career, and even better for life in general.

After the show ended (just over 3 1/2 hours later), I headed home where I got my stuff together to prepare for my last week of work for a while.

Thanks again to the hosts, Marie and Chris, for throwing another awesome party!

And in case you are wondering, Marie is dressed as Lincoln, Vampire Hunter and Chris is Fix-It Felix.

Ringing In The New Year (or Starting 2013 On A Great Note)

I’m not a huge fan of going out for New Years Eve. You spend way to much for the cover at a bar, drinks are extremely expensive, and it’s horribly crowded. But it’s not fun staying at home alone either.

So in November, I was out to lunch with my friend Rayshell and she decided to throw a party for New Years Eve! Yay!

I had a great time celebrating with everyone. Most of the people there were either single or their significant other wasn’t able to be there, so I didn’t feel like the only single person in the room.

The evening started off fun and we all picked out our hats.

IMG_1231

Rayshell’s boyfriend is from Australia, and he’s back there spending time with his family, so Rayshell sent him this picture to let him know what he was missing out on.

IMG_1238

The party had a ton of great people and great food. But I was pretty good for the evening. I mainly had veggies (without the dip). Over the course of 7 hours at the party, I had 3 drinks and then the rest was water. And the only splurges that I really had was this spinach pastry thing I ate after midnight to get something in my stomach so I wasn’t hungry when I drove home and a taste of the red velvet cake that was brought (I only ate a little of it, the frosting was too sweet).

I’m glad that I was able to stay away from the chips and dips and all the other tempting goodies. I drank a bit more than I planned, but I also drank way more water than expected too. So I think it balances out.

I love how I started 2013 surrounded by friends, both new and old, and having a ton of fun. I hope that this is a sign of what is to come this year!

And thank you so much Rayshell for throwing an awesome party! I had the best time!

It’s The Most Social Time Of The Year (or I Wish There Were Two Of Me)

I love how many events there are to go to this time of year. I’m learning to not say yes to all of them, but there are still plenty I want to attend.

There are the usual holiday parties, happy hours, and New Years Eve parties. But this year, it’s the first year I’m a member of SAG-AFTRA (an actor’s union in case you didn’t know) and there are a ton of screenings that I’m invited to for movies that are coming out now.

I wish I could go to them all. This week, there are 4 screenings that I wish I could go to. But since I work late 3 nights a week, I can’t go. This is the end of the season for my job, so I really can’t ask for any time off. If I get an audition or something, I know that my boss will let me go, but I don’t think asking to attend a screening is very appropriate.

I’m trying to pick out screenings to go to on Wednesdays (the one day a week I work “normal” business hours), but either there aren’t any on that day or they are for a film that I don’t care to see.

Fortunately, I will have some days off around Christmas and New Years so I can attend events then. One of the girls in my Girls Night Out group is throwing a New Years Eve party that I’m going to go to. And I’m not totally sure what I am doing for Christmas, but the “traditional” Jewish thing to do is to go to a movie and then have Chinese food. I’ll probably do that, I just don’t know if anyone else will be joining me.

In the meantime, I have to be careful with my time. I can fit a couple of events in between my work shifts, but I also need to remember to take time out for myself and time to sleep. For example, next Sunday I have acting class until 10pm. Then there is a LA Actors Tweetup that I want to at least make an appearance at. But then the next morning, I am babysitting at 9am until my work shift starts and then I’ll be at work until 8:30pm.

That’s a whirlwind couple of days!

Sharing With The World (or The Screening Finally Happened)!

Tuesday evening was the screening for “140Characters: A Documentary About Twitter” which I helped to create and produce. I was so happy to be able to share the documentary with the world! We have been working on it for so long, but it was worth it!

We screened at the Autry Screening Room, and the first thing I saw was a couple of our awesome posters.

I was pretty busy working at the screening, so I didn’t get a ton of pictures. It seemed like everyone liked the film. There were moments where everyone was laughing, and during the more somber parts it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

After the film, we got a nice loud round of applause. Even though I have seem our film what seems like 100s of times looking things over, it’s so different seeing it on a big screen. As soon as the opening credits came up, tears came to my eyes I because I was just so happy!

After the screening, there was a Q&A with the production team as well as the subjects. Most of the questions were focused on our subjects which included Heather Spohr of The Spohrs Are Multiplying as well as Friends of Maddie and Dave Danhi of The Grilled Cheese Truck.

We did manage to get a group photo after (sorry it’s blurry, I forgot my regular camera).

After the Q&A, we gathered outside for some more photos.

Here I am with the wonderful Heather Spohr (who inspired me to start this blog).

And here I am with fellow bloggers J and Matt Logelin.

There was an outing to a bar after the screening, but because I had an early day at work the next morning, I couldn’t make it.

To my readers who made it to the screening, thank you! I wish I could have chatted more with everyone there, but it was a bit crazy. And if you couldn’t make it but want to see the documentary, we are selling copies of it on our website.

Even though it was fun being behind the camera this time, I can’t wait to be in front of it again soon!

It’s a Stripper Penguin! (or The Best Bachelorette Party Ever!)

First of all, I managed to survive Carmageddon with all the driving I had to do around town. The only time that I was caught in awful traffic was trying to get from Culver City to the Valley on Saturday evening. It took me over 2 hours to get there. But it was worth it, because I was on my way to my friend Marie’s bachelorette party!

I’ve been to a few bachelorette parties in the past, but they have all been pretty tame. Sometimes just dinner and dessert with the girls. But I knew that this party was going to be a bit more outrageous than that, and I was right!

(sorry that this post has so many pictures and is so long)

The evening started out with some drinks and appetizers at the apartment of one of the girls hosting the night. It was a very chill part of the night, but we were all just so happy to be celebrating the upcoming wedding of Marie (19 more days to go)!

Then, the entertainment arrived. If you don’t know Marie, you just need to know that she LOVES penguins. When she first got engaged, I wanted to get her a penguin cake topper, but I couldn’t decide on which one to get her (I got her a wedding planning guide instead). And the starter entertainment for the night was a stripper penguin!

I guess technically he wasn’t a stripper, he wore a sweat suit over the penguin costume and took that off, but then he danced the rest of the time in the penguin outfit. This was seriously the funniest thing I’ve ever seen! I was laughing so hard I was crying! Everyone loved the penguin.

After that craziness, we were off to dinner. Marie arranged for a Cadillac limo to drive us all around. That was so nice. If we didn’t have that, we would have taken 4 cars to get everywhere. And the limo had 3, yes 3, bars inside.

Also, the mood lighting inside was pretty fun too.

Our dinner stop was at Lala’s Grill. I had never been there before, but it was so delicious! The steaks were wonderful and I wanted to drink the chimichurri sauce! I was enjoying my meal so much that I didn’t get any pictures of that part of the evening.

After dinner, we had the driver drive us around the valley a bit so we could enjoy some drinks in the limo (all of the locations we were going to were very close together). And then we ended up at Oil Can Harry’s. I had never been there before either, but it was great! Saturday nights are disco nights. Downstairs there is dancing and upstairs there is karaoke.

We did some dancing.

And the bride to be did some karaoke (sorry for the blurry pic, all I had was my phone).

And eventually, it was the end of the night and we headed back into the limo to go back to the apartment to enjoy some dessert.

After then, it was getting close to 3am and I had to be up early the next day (and still drive all the way back home). I said goodbye to everyone, and laughed about the stripper penguin for the entire drive back.

I had the most fabulous night. I want to thank Jacole and Kelly for planning such an awesome event and inviting me. And thank you Marie for getting married so this party could be thrown for you! I’m so happy that Marie is getting married and I’m getting excited for my adventure in Texas for the wedding soon!

Oh, and an extra special thank you to our limo driver, Mike, who put up with all of our craziness all night.

And, he let us call him Magic Mike.
